Sorry to hijack, but out of interest what's the best way into this profession?
My lad is 16,computer mad and this is the type of thing he'd enjoy. He's enrolled on a Btec higher diploma (5 gcse's plus) for september then fancies uni but is that the best way in? Again apologies for the hijack. Also when you say "competitive" what is that roughly? Or say above/below £40k? Thanks. |

I went to university for 4 years and while the content of my degree hasnt been particularly valuable to what I do now (1st / 2nd line support) the job I had to get in year 3 was invaluable. Managed to get a job in a top 5 law firm and I have no doubt that having that on my CV got me my job once I graduated (still in law, in the city).
My advise would be to try and get summer jobs etc while studying, build up some experience... Then focus on what area of IT he wants to work in and tailor his education to suit, by that I mean dont take on a computer science degree if you have no interest in programming! Look in to the Microsoft courses as well as university Good luck

Vaughant - to be honest i'm not sure these days, i was lucky enough to be offered a job in an Investment Bank on the back of work experience when I was 17 (im 32 now!). A lot of our guys have come from overseas (mainly our India office) but do have experience and qualifications. I havent got many qualifications just a lot of experience in this kind of role (not doing support now though).
Competitive meaning whatever the usual contractor wage is, off the top of my head I dont know but imagine around the £180 - £200 a day mark? Dont quote me on that though maybe more maybe less.... Chris

Cheers guys and again apologies for thread hijack!!
It's early days of course but I'd like to send him off on the correct route if you know what I mean? Thanks guys. Wages sound pretty good, about £50000. That'll save him sponging off us too much in the future!!! |

remmeber contractors will always get paid more but they get no benefits, holiday, medical, sick pay, pension, plus you will need to pay income tax on that (although our internal agency do this for contractors)...... Also I imagine further out of London / other Citys the wages may go down, but imagine the cost of living does as well so probably balances out...

There's a couple where I work in Aberdeen (electrical) and they get the same deal, their on about £50k but of course no sick, pension some not even o/t. It's good if you need extra now but in the long term there's not much in it. |
