Default Dissapointed in the E39 M5, am I mad or missing the point?

Been looking very seriously at getting an E39 M5, and I had a test drive in one today. The MAFS have been done very recently, and the vanos seems to work as described by the test Stu put up on another post....

I have to say, I was quite dissapointed in it, , was lovelly and torquey, comfy and easy to drive, and felt very tight, but it just didn't seem to really go all that well for a 400Bhp car .. Don't get me wrong, as a package it seems great, but just lacks any drama/excitement ...One thing that I did notice is that you can really feel the weight of the car driving it, is really odd, as the chassis is nimble, but hefty at the same time.

Am I missing the point?

Wish I had never been in fast cossies before

Might go and have a look at a few more, or maybe an E46 M3?

Yes they do give you a diffrent feel to a cossie, try guessing the speed when driving, and then look at the speedo, you will get a shock

Why would you go an look at a E46 M3 if you wasn't happy with an M5?

I think your mad, I can't see how a 400bhp M5 would be boring and slow as an everyday car?

Take up skydiving, soon gets you bored of cars

To be honest i dont know if its just me but their starting to feel really dated the e39 as is the e46!

Superb cars for the money but i would much rather be in an AMG than an M car

I think they are an awesome car and something i'll own someday but some people do get carried away when they start talking about how good they are

they dont make a fuss about going fast, i suppose its very unlike a cossie lol

the best thing about them imo is the fact they are so controlable when completly sideways, perfectly balanced,

No mate, the poor bloke was having kittens anyway , but I suspect it would be very easy to drive sideways from the bit of a play I had.

they get there very quickly!

and in comfort!

and to make things even better, at no point do you think somethings going to fall off, or think its about to blow up

and you could brake as hard as you could at 186, with your hands off the steering wheel, and pull up nice and straight!

I think youre on drugs mate...

Making power all the way around the rev range. By the time youre off a slip road youre over 100mph.

Maybe it didnt feel quick because its a quality well built car.

they are a much bigger car than any cossie so will always drive different. Most cossie drivers spend time and money making thier car as nimble and chuckable and aggressive as possible so of course something like an M5 will seem boring.

Theres no doubting the performance of an M5, high speed, good handling, good comfort and no drama. If thats what you want then fine. if not......

Its a 5 series, its a big massive saloon car!!!

if it made a bit more noise, youd feel like youre going faster! try driving it hard, with all the windows open so you can actually hear something.

And what does the YB say on the tin, You're Broke?

M cars will never feel boom and bust like an old turbo, but the M5 is a great all round drivers car. Maybe you just want another Cossie?

IMO the only M5 to have that is VERY quick(and looks half decent) is the E90 M5.
I've been in numerous E39 M5's and they just seem like a fat lardy well built and quickish saloon....that also these days seem to be driven by(and this is my opinion) people that didn't stand a chance of even renting one back when it was new,let alone them purchasing one......
At the end of the day,a cossie gave you an everyday useable car with supercar(in the day)performance at an affordable price, the M5 just didn't do that....so why would people compare? Maybe because its just that the cossie still holds a decent value compared to its original list price unlike the M5...so these two cars have come into comparison wars/debates due to thier value brackets...but each to thier own as they say!

M5 does two things:

1) reliable, fast, effortless, comfortable transport

2) hooligan weapon

You only experienced the first half, you need to abuse it and get it sideways for the other half

Its strange because when I drive one it does not feel lardy to me.

It feels so much smaller than it looks, its chuckable and has great handling.

Of course an E90 is better but its 3 times the price!

I have to admit after reading all the stuff on here about how good they are I was let down when I drove one slightly. Very good car and yes pulled great and couldn't really fault it but I think I just expected too much after all the talk of how good they are.

Same goes for E46 M3 in my opinion, I was seriously let down after driving one of them because I loved them until I did....

Im glad someone else pointed out what Ive often wondered about the M5, i just expected too much i think, when you think 400bhp you think " fuck this will be fast" but it just doesnt pan out like that , I would love one these days to put little heidi in the back and do my running about in but i just know i would look at it after 4 weeks and think"god this is shit"!

So i`ll probably end up with one next yr now Ive said that lol

An M3 isnt faster mate, I raced untold amounts, At least 2 round to 145 and they were fairly easily beat.

But im sure youre going to tell me none of them were trying.

Too thirsty for me. Such a big heavy car, why try and make it fast?
