I used to like them but i hav enever seen a genuine honest example, there was a few kicked about many years ago in my area and they were rough then......very rough

Think they have usal renault gearbox problems and timing belts are a nightmare but maybe wrong, all due to lack of room to work on

Cracking little cars, much better than just a normal valver.

PS

at combe you would be doing a mid to high 1:20 in a standard willaims on decent tyres which is better than most folk on the RS day were managing in their cossies, I actually overtook a few in my valver clio and thats only doing 1:30 flat.

You can just be SO committed in them because they handle so predicatably

Very capable little cars, handle very well, nice to drive (much better than the 172 imo), brakes arent too bad. Gearboxes arent the strongest of things, timing belt is a little difficult to do due to lack of space but not impossible by any means, build quality is a little bit iffy (like most french cars of that era), clutches are weak and prone to ripping themselves to bits.

www.cliosport.net is a canny little forum by the way

Wider track at the front end improves handling over the standard valver, and the Williams F7R 2ltr engine is so much more torque'y and responsive than the 16v's F7P 1.8 engine, the difference really is night and day

But the 172 is nowhere near as much of a drivers car as the Williams, i loved the Williams to drive but didnt like the 172... even though there is next to no performance difference between the two.

Edited to say the Williams looks a millions times better than the 172! Plus you hardly ever see them on the roads!

A friend had one when I owned my 309 Gti. Handled well but can't say it was ultimately that much faster cross country than the Pug - a bit punchier out of bends perhaps.
It was nearly new but I can't say it was a particularly reliable car - perhaps he had a bad one but he made frequent use of his warranty!

Exactly! the 172 has no character imo. I love the look of the williams, and i love old skool hot hatches.

It's weird, cos i havent seen one for AGES anywhere, then last week i saw a really nice one on the M4, then was watching 5th gear tonight and it got the old cogs whirring for one again.

Iv'e heard they are built crap, but My R5 turbo was the same and didnt bother me too much.

Better built than a R5GTT imo, but not by miles and miles

A bloke round here has a boggo standard Williams, always brings a smile to my face when i see it

just think... this could be you...

a mate has one and its a absolute fookin rot box,its gone in all sorts of places and makes a tired old shonky sierra look good, he has had so much trouble sourcing williams parts that the bodyshop its in for new panels has had to fabricate most of them as he says the williams is different to normal clio.

You're seriously having a giraffe?
I know this is a ford site, but the two cars are hardly comparable.

i was gunna get a williams, but all the ones i viewed were hanging so i chose this:

1.8 16v 137bhp, shines on roundabouts, still holds its weight against most, im sure the williams is better, but we get on just fine
1.back arches rot out on them
2.ELECTRICS
3.gearboxs, check for whining/crunching thru the gears
4and as said good history checking specifically for gearbox history/ cambelts as they are a pain, and only the pahse 1 williams came with a plate saying the build number hope this helps
