Time attack is what they were made for surely, going round a racetrack?

rs500 btcc car is well out of date, still quick but no match for the likes of olly clarke

Evening Chipper

In fairness to Martin I was holding him up during our couple of laps round the track together. As fun as it was, he was all over me. I planned to move over on the straight after "trying" to hold him off for a lap or 2, but Martin pulled off the track just seconds before I did, to drop his passenger off.

I suspect running full power and without an unknown paying passenger on board the story would have been very different.

Just as an aside, did anyone manage to overtake the V8 MGB GT?
I was surprised, especially now I learn his spec is by no means supercar. I know Cossies can be fast, but that was genuinely quick all the time (corners, brakes, power)

I've never seen anyone overtake the MGB in 7-10 years or so of going to Combe on track. He's always quick and the car seems to love it.

I didn't see him on track while I was there so never got to run against him, but doubt I'd be kicking his arse!

Hey Glen, you should be able to see the 3 door hassling me - I have it all caught on my 2 in car cameras, so I'll post it up on here as soon as I can get it off my camcorders - I need to get a Firewire card and lead first, but I will post it.

Thanks Mike, glad it entertained, and glad you got loads of good photos of it It was deffo in the right hands- lots of power in that car but relatively mildy modified elsewhere, yet blisteringly quick on track.

See what I wrote above to Chip, sorry for holding you up, but I had a great view in my rear view mirror watching you following me around.

Was about to pull over to let you get on with it when you pulled off to dump the passenger.

Thanks for not punting me out of the way

Wrong again!! I had no issues whilst lapping Combe the car was running just fine as always, I chose to use much less boost than I would normally to save fuel as I was planning on running all day but sadly a melted wastegate diaphragm cut my charity rides short.

Btw I'm not blinkered into thinking the Evo's and other modern machines are not better in most area's than the ageing Sierra/Escorts but I like what I have thanks very much. Still wouldn't mind an Evo as a spare car but I have plenty of spares already!

Martin what we used to do years ago when we did these similar days was to lay down one qualifying lap, then do the scenic guided tour, save this type of post

Cheers Si, your car isn't slow that's for sure . I couldn't (wouldn't have anyway!) punt you out of the way as the Charity ride drivers were given strict guide rules as to what we could do and where we could overtake etc

Yep I reckon a lot of the charity cars were running slower than they could in the interests of longevity - some of them were out almost constantly and I can understand not wanting to blow something while doing stuff for charity out the goodness of your heart.

I was standing by one of the pro-photographers at one point though when the Labatts Sierra seemed to put a real spurt on and it was noticeably quick then. The photographer noticed it and we reckoned he either had a brave passenger or wanted to get back to the pits for a wee or a drink!

I've seen Martin's Escort run a couple of years back or so ( maybe in convoy with Lee in the Reyland Sierra ) and it was really quick then so I could appreciate he was running at reduced pace to conserve his car

Still good to watch though

Wasnt having a dig at all, I was merely commenting on how capable Si B's road car was as a lot of people on here dont seem to realise quite how good "out of the box" these cars actually are.

As per my question above, which refers to your "qualifying lap" concept, Martin, how quick have you done combe on your best ever lap if those ones were well off the pace?
Or if you havent yet run a fast lap, whats your gut feel for what time you can get?

Do you think you can get sub 1:10 like the evo's do?

this thread started intresting and is going to end in the same old same old, you cant put a modern rally car built for road use against a an old cossie! clearly the modern car will come up on top, scoobys and evos are ready to race out the box, but i think people that buy them are all about speed speed speed, people who buy cossies,rs1600i,series 1's,mk1' and mk2s buy them because they generaly have a passion for the blue oval. this threads going know were lol

maybe should get a track day up and running with some serious comp between jap crap and rs's. would love to see it, mind u santa pod ended up like a comp between jap and ford.

I still have passion for Fords even though I am a BMW fan.

Infact, so much so, I'm off to look at Twellsies Cossie on Monday - I must be mad after all these years without one - seems I'm about to fall off the wagon

The BMW has to go - no space for both, as I use a snotty escort diesel for commuting

575bhp, set of decent brakes, bolt on suspension change, and a standard gearbox.

oh, and some carbon bits, and thats about it, its essentialy pretty standard other than the engine, amazing how good they come from the factory to drive so well with that sort of power

That was my point indeed on the Castle Combe post. I was flying. Jay was flying faster

As I said on there, I've not come across an "ordinary man's" Cossie going so quick or well. People like Martin, Porkie, Andy Gallagher, Labatts car etc are all tuner cars or awesome specs, and get driven hard and fast.

Jay's though was relatively mild in modding terms, and built mainly by himself, and look at the results. I was very impressed. Not because Cossies are pants (they're not, I had one for 5 years), but because his was particularly good.

I think if he could have got better traction out the corners he would have done perhaps even better. I noticed he was laying rubber out of the chicanes and Tower bend

hell the evo 1 is not expected to be as good as the evo 10!or even a evo 6!and thats only 6 years older?

I think we as ford cosworth owners need to realised that indeed a evo,bmw etc is a better car(maybe not have the character of a cossie)but i think we all can be very proud that a cossie is still a head turner and a respected car for what it achieved! And that it is still compared to the modern day cars!
here here i have 2 lol

its about generations, all they young lads driving about want scoobys an evos cuz thats what theyve been brought up on,i wanted an erst s1 or s2 since i was 15.i had a 1.6 efi xr3i rs turbo replica at 18 and got my rst at 23,only because i wanted one so bad.
i prefer older cars as they look better, more character,i love the aggressive boxy shape of my rs turbo,i owned a vw golf mk 2 heavily modified and i loved that 2,and a vw jetta 16v gti,its just something about the older cars, they look better, and were built to last, thats why were still driving them 20 years on.
my m8s nan has a new peugot thingy its 1 year old and all the engine and alternator etc is covered in corrosion and looks shit, like said above, they dont make em like they used 2.
subarus engines are all backwards,i wouldnt like to work on one and evos just look shit after the 6 they just got ruined an scoobys got ruined after the bug eyed look.R32 is the only skyline to get.i mite be stuck in the late 80s,early 90s but at least my cars got road presence and not a japanese taxi that my nan could drive fast.
and yep,ppl coming back slating fords should just do one and be boring in their comfy bmw etc.
its all about the passion..
but agreed, not everybody wants to be constantly spending money on their car just to keep it going, but IMO its worth it for the nods and glances and the appreciation that some people give you about your car,and its just not the same in the newer cars, theyre all built to be cheap and fuel economic, wheres the fun in driving gone?
