Default 2017 Car Tax

I had no idea things were changing until a chap in the pub mentioned it.
Only for new cars obviously, but still some hefty price tags.

My Range Rover was £550 last yr,, it did about 23mpg so not too bad and I don't think I ruined the road or environment much more than our mini which is about £50 to tax and I can't drive both....doesn't make much sense when you pay way more tax on petrol when your car is poor on mpg, you would almost think that if the car does 10mpg they would lower car tax as they would cream it on fuel tax which is actually linked to how much you wear out the roads

It's complicated isn't it, I get it but it's yet another thing to think about when buying a used car in a few years.

Tbh Toby that would make it fair for everyone if you do miles you pay. Simple really. And its has nothing to do with emmisions......

Apart from 'road tax' isnt road tax, its vehicle excise duty, based on emissions. Really i guess it should be a combination of emissions and mileage to be truly fair, however on the whole, big cars tend to do more mileage and be less efficient and thus the tax works if the price of the tax bands takes this into account.

VED doesn't pay for the roads, Council tax pays for wear and tear on the majority of local roads, VED just goes into the main pot.

That would be too logical for the government

You could have a Range Rover sport diesel and do 5000 miles a year and put out the same ammount of co2 as a pugeot 208 thats doing 10,000miles a year. Yet one will cost you £400 and the other £1200+ a year.

I can only think that this new taxatrion is to try and convince people to think about electric cars. Even though some of those come with tax as well now.

If they stopped messing about and put the road tax on fuel then it would not matter
What car you had

Big car uses more fuel = more tax via the fuel
Small car uses less fuel = less tax

Then no matter what you use
If it burns fuel of one type or the other your paying your tax
And it can't be dodged or forgot

And ever the people that should be on the road will be paying tax

I've always liked the idea that you pay more the more miles you do. Plenty of cars that are only £20 for VED (or even free) like BMWs, Golf and Octavia and they are usually used for big miles (as opposed to my cars which are really Sunday cars).

this is just the start though. It will get much much worse over the coming years as the government has to find a way to recover the tax lost from less fuel used as cars get more efficient/ use electric etc.
