Default 3 door owner needs help

Hello I have a couple of car related questions,
I have noticed one of the front wheel callipers is binding a bit , guessing it's just the pistons not retracting, does a new seal kit fix this problem,- Also see attached photo does any one know what these numbers could mean stamped into my block, and where does one find the engine vin number , I can't find it?

No point guessing, until you've the calipers taken apart, you wont know what needs repaired.

A seal kit is only one part.

Numbers could mean someone has had the engine apart at some stage. Tracing who might be difficult

Hi ,

Is that the original block? because those number suggest its not. They should start GR followed by numbers think.

I would buy the complete seal kit including pistons, etc.

I have the same issue with my front brakes

the engine number is near the water pump the last 7 letters of this are the the chassis number of the car the engine was originally fitted to,
as for the brakes send them to biggred and theyll come back better than new

Sending them to a UK company for refurb would be a rather expensive process if his location is correct.

0k thanks for the reply, is the number under the 205 stamping ie 85hm6015b-b this is just a casting number right ?, you say the vin is near the water pump, is it on the side or the front of the block ?
thanks guys

VIN = Vehicle ID Number.

Surely it has nothing to do with the engine number ?

As previously stated the original engine number should match the last 7 digits of the vin number. Characters 1 & 2 are the build year code (mine is GA which equates to November 1986) and can be found on the exhaust side of the block near the bottom just behind the water pump

Default dash warning light

hello just wanted to ask about the two little warning lights underneth the fuel and temp guage, theres a little picture of a car and and what looks to be skid marks.
i took my car into the local garage to get a new spedo cable and rear diff mount put in, as soon as i drove her home i noticed the warning lights were on, could it have some thing to do with the spedo cable being installed , as the mechanic said he had to pull part of the dash out.???

thanks

Sounds like you're talking about the ABS warning lights. They should come on when you switch the car on, but go off again after a short period to signify the system is working OK.
I would suggest if they weren't on before the clocks came out that a plug has not been replaced correctly when they were refitted

It's the ABS WL as said, I would check the connections on the reservoir under the bonnet, as they may have got disturbed.

Yes, you do need to remove the instrument cluster to replace it.

+1 New seals will fix fluid leaks but your pistons themselves may be rusty or pitted/scratched which is more likely.

If your car had a complete new engine then the cosworth YB engine build number will be on the front face of the block by the water pump. This number bears no relation to the VIN number of the car though, that is normally stamped on the side where your numbers currently are.

However if it was just a new block then they have no numbers stamped either on the side or the front, its left blank or stamped by the engine builder which looks to be the case with your current engine.

The only block that would have your cars vin stamped on the side would be the one originally fitted to the car.

Just pumping out the pistons on your calipers and giving them a clean could resolve your problem, if the seals are gone they would be leaking.

Easy enough job to fit new seals though.
