Default compbrake top mounts - bit confusing

Hi all I have some compbrake top mounts but bought them second hand and they didnt come with the bottom bushes. So found some pics on here and bought the bushes that fit the top mount bearing centre bore.

But im rather confused how they mount with my GAZ coil overs.

So I have the following bits...

And I assemble them onto the damper shaft in the order they are laid out ...

So the bottom bush will sit nicely in the top mount bearing but ...and this is where I am confused....it doesnt slide down far enough to sit on top of the spring top cup. This is because it isnt big enough to clear the step in the damper shaft size.

Am I missing something here as the top cap needs to be held firmly in place and as shown it will just ratttle about....

So any help would be greatly received! thanks. Paul

Won't the spring hold the 'top hat' up against the collar when under load? I.e. The bit that moves will be held up?

I not 100% sure but I think there is a spacer washer that comes with the Gaz coilovers (may be Golds only) ?
Otherwise isn't it the original bearing that's missing ?

Ridgey, interesting you say that....I was under the impression that the original bearing wasnt used anymore? ..........but thinking about it, the whole assembly still needs something to allow it to turn when the wheel is turned and I guess the compbreak top mount bearing doesnt do this, it only allows movement of the arm due to compression? Not sure, someone please correct me

Have a search on Gaz website, I had a diagram I'm sure of the assembly, but is sometime ago and can't remember the detail.

Caddyshack, If I allow it to do this, then the spring top hat wont be centralised. - image below imagine the spring is doing what my hands are, the top hat central bore is much larger than the point on the damper where it would be sat.

currently still liking Ridgey's comment about the ford bearing. Awaiting further responses lol!!

Yea, that doesnt look right does it.

You might need to get a spacer turned up. Shouldnt be hard if you do a drawing of what you want. I found these guys very accomodating....info@kingsleyengineering.co.uk speak to Ray 01420 80202

You could take it to them, they are only in Alton GU34 2QR.

the bush needs to be a good fit against the bearing
the thread on the shock will be a good fit for the bush
when it is all bolted together it will hold it tight

Just get a spacer machined up to fit between your top cap and your bush spacer coned shaped to give it a bit of strength or get the whole thing machined as one or get a new top cap machined with the extra length added in so it sits tight up against the bearing bush

As Paul says. The bearing is in the solid mount. There is a spacer needed to fill the gap between the spring cup and mount

Ok i could get a spacer made up but how close should they be? The ford rally prep manual shows it quite alot closer than the 11.2mm I've measured.... anyone else got any pics of their setup?

so the bearing centre is 19.9mm but the top hat bush that fits in the bearing needs a centre bore of 19.2 to slide down on the damper. so won't be much meat if I want to bore that out.

In your bottom picture is how I would have them and not mounted higher closer to the top mount as you will have high angle problems if there to close.
Make it wider at the top and have it coned shaped so it covers the flat part on the top cap it will have plenty of meat then

Cheers paul
