Dissabled cossy owner sos
Hi all, im carl, i have been a ford nut for 20 years, i had my pride and joy saff cos in 2006 for a two year period until i had to sell for the new addition to the family and get a 406rstate wahooo, last year a tidy saph 2wd was up for sale as a rolling shell so i had to have it as i would never afford one again way things are going, i have most engine parts , need interior, wheels, diff, gbox, and a few other things, 3 weeks ago i was racng at fort william on a dh bike and crashed on my seeding run, i broke my t7 and have no feeling from chest down or movement but arms and head work fine, im asking if anyone has advise on auto gbox fitment to the yb, its not ideal but wont to finish my prject and drive it too, thanks in advance carlos

Hi Carl
My deepest sympathy for what's happened to you mate.
There was, a good few years ago in one of the Ford mags a guy who had converted his Sapphire to auto and hand controls, I'm pretty sure he used a Granada 'box.
I'd probably keep the engine standard power though.

Sorry to hear that mate and hope things improve for you, I do believe you could buy a cossie with auto box from new, a few have surfaced over the years but not sure what box they used, I would defo say it's possible, I'll have a search round see what I can find out

Sorry to hear about your accident. Good for you in keeping the project going.
Are you dead set on keeping it yb as it might be easier to find a more suitable engine and auto box combined? I personally would want the yb though

I assume you have a good support network and people to help but if you need any assistance shout and I am sure we can get a little group together to solve a few things, I am not wonderful with a welder but if you need anything welding up to hold the box then let me know and I will do my best to help.
Do you know Brendog from the DH world? I know him well and he lives near me.

Whilst this is an Aussie company, there are definitely companies in the UK who offer conversions like this, just cant find them...although they also arent cheap.
But you can get a fully "automatic" clutch/gearchange system as far as I know.
http://www.pmeautoconversions.com.au/
more googles..
http://www.rica.org.uk/content/makin...er-change-gear
http://www.dlf-data.org.uk/products....=1839&sortname
http://www.schaeffler.com/remotemedi...d_clutch_1.pdf
But a full auto would be the more pleasant and relaxing option I'm sure, would really need something with an overdrive otherwise it would be quite noisy to drive unless you could get a very tall diff.
Maybe something like this ? although no idea on ratios.

From yankland, something like this 4 speed, simple, mechanical and overdrive. Maybe something intended for their Merkur might work ?

Now then Carlos!
I'm sure it can be done, just as you will be back on a dh bike again one way or another.
Martyn Ashton style!
Let me know when they transfer you back down home mate.

Thanks stevie turbo, some interesting ideas there, think budget is gonna narrow it down to a 4speed auto from a sierra and convert the lot and will involve less hacking the car around i want to keep it nice and subtle where i can on the conversion side of things

Definitely get one with an overdrive top gear though...it'd be pretty nasty with a 1:1 top gear...it'd be like driving around in 4th in a manual when in top gear without the overdrive.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I remember in one of the Cosworth special magazines by Fast Ford in the late 90's a lad had a saph converted to take hand controls for the brakes, clutch and accelerator pedal. I'll try and dig it out.

There's a lad in the rsoc who does disability conversions, he lives local to me and his dad is wheel chair bound. His dad has had many fast fords inc mk1 Frs, mk2 Frs and Frs 500. All with their conversion on. I don't know the name of their company but I have his phone number and am good mates with him. If you want I can send you his number and he would be more than happy to help you out. If I remember correctly the clutch is worked from a pressure switch in the gear stick so you could use a normal T5 box with a hydraulic clutch conversion

Thanks would have gone down this route for sure if money was no object but I think I would need 4 k for this as I don't have a t5 and there not cheap plus hydro clutch, clutch kit then the adaptions which I think are around 1500/2000 pounds,I'll have too settle with a wanky auto box for now ,have spoke to a guy today about upgrading the epicyclic gears from the granny cosy box
