As a car detailer I see lots of nearly new cars with gravel rash on (I assume this is what it is?). Not good I know and I too would be disappointed but if/when they paint it then won't it just happen again without mud flaps?

its pretty poor that manufacturers don't do that themselves considering how much these cost.

They have to fix it to your satisfaction, its a brand new Ł30k+ car not a second-hand one. Sounds like Ford did not get this right when they were designing the new Focus RS.
I would be well pissed off and do not let Ford fob you off.

Worth a try, it will protect to a certain degree. I look after a 458 Speciale that has film around the arches and it is pretty chewed up already (after 5000 miles).

I looked at my car earlier, although it is only a 4 year old cmax the finished edge on the bumper is very similar to yours. After 47k, there isn't even a stone chip visible so yes, I would say it is a manufacturing defect.

Was it definitely not there when you collected the car? Could even have been damage from a strap rubbing or something when it was being transported.

Could very well be. I have done an extra 300miles since first finding it and it doesnt seem any worse.

The strap theory could be exactly right. As I mentioned the dealer at which I bought it (independent Ford dealer) doesn't have a body shop. So they have sent me to TrustFord who does. Appointment tomorrow. Thought I get the feeling its just a look over, take some pictures and email Ford job from there end tomorrow.

Just back, he said the paint is weak and that ford will 99% likely authorize repair, but it would take a few weeks for them to do so.

He said it would be a smart repair, is this ok? Or should I push for a new rear bumper?

As soon as they admit liability I'd be wanting a new bumper, do you want a patched up brand new car?

Not happy with the 2-3week wait. Has anyone experience going through Ford warranty. Are the wait times really that long on repair authorization?

It's 2/3 weeks wait till the work is done....
Not 2/3 weeks for the work to be done.
Hit drift mode and enjoy.....

2 -3 weeks to authorise it then the time to do the work. If its anything like Vauxhall warranty repairs the time to do the work could be several weeks!

No, I understand that. He said the repair would be overnight job. Just waiting 2 - 3 weeks to hear back from Ford is a pain.

Surely a full rear bumper respray throws up more issues than just a simple smart repair? no?

It's quite common for new cars to have smart repairs, they do get damaged in transportation. As long as it is carried out by Ford to a standard you are happy with then I wouldn't be too put off.

It's not the Sale of Goods Act any more, it'sthe Consumer Rights Act, and you don't get an automatic 6 month warranty on anything.

You do have 6 months whhere you don't have to prove the defect was there at the time of purchase, but the retailer has to prove that it wasn't.

I'd be happy getting the bumper(s) painted and the protective film applied by the bodyshop - with mudflaps if they are available. The supplying dealer might pay for the film and flaps - FoMoCo won't. Good luck.

My Daughter had a paint problem on the bonnet of her new Ford Focus Titanium, after complaining directly to the Director of the dealership they fitted a brand new bonnet.
Sometimes you have to dig your heels in to get what you want.
I cant understand why the dealer you bought your car from is not bending over backwards to sort your problem out to your complete satisfaction.
The dealers reputation is surely very important? The outcome of this will determine if you will be praising the dealership to your friends or telling them to steer clear of them.

3 weeks down the line. My dealer has fobbed me off to another Ford dealer, as they dont have a body shop. The other ford dealer has submitted a warranty application. And every day im getting a phonecall saying, "No decision has been made yet". Im getting so frustrated and cross. Scared to even drive my car incase the damage gets worse.

What are my options?

If there is finance on the car you can ask the finance company to help you as they have a lot of power

They cannot fob you off , its done 500 miles not 50,000

Take it back and demand it being repaired ,also demand a Focus RS courtesy car not a Ka .

Once done check it, if your not happy Demand a new car or ask for mud flaps to be fitted .

Shocking really , cut back on paint + time = a proper shit paint job !!!

Also just to add ,don't use drift mode you will have no bumper left

There have been so many good reviews on the new Focus RS, it would be interesting to hear from other new owners if they all have the same problem or was this a one off cock up in the factory?

I did a quick look on autotrader to see if I could see that area on a few used ones. Most hide that area, but I found this one. Its hard to tell , but to me it looks like identical damage.

Also down to it being 4wd . Stop doing your home work and enjoy it and let fords come back to you . or buy a set of mud flaps and forget about it

Final question guys. Whats the pros and cons for a new bumper vs smart repair. If I push for a new painted bumper surely theres a higher chance of a paint difference than a smart repair?

The bumpers are painted separately from the car anyway, they used to be painted in a completely different factory, I presume they still are.

I would push for a new bumper, if it's not right then they can do it again cant they. Don't worry about it, get behind the wheel and enjoy it.
