Looking for some advice on what parts and brands of parts you guys are using on fast road set up saph 4x4's to make them handle better.

6 degree rear beam seems to be the most popular mod, this stops the geometry change on the rear. £1200 ish from Mk motorsport. Ahmed bayjoo springs or quality coil overs. Mk also does adjustable front track control arms, compression struts and bladed anti roll bar. Get that all set up properly, new bushes and the some good tyres like the new toyo r1r and it should Stanform it. I think strut braces would help too.

I have Koni dempers and Ahmed Bayjoo springs on mine with poly bushes all round, including the diff mount. At the front it also has a sort of compression struts fitted that still retain the original antiroll bar. After changing the rear beam for a 6 degree one it had a lot less understeer on track. It still has some understeer left so I plan to change the rear arb for a thicker one with rose jointed drop links.

Diff mount is defo a good mod.

I would like to go out in a safd with a 6 degree rear beam to see how good they are.

A lot of the rear diffs are tired too and don't lock very well, worth getting it to Bara motorsport for a freshen up. Or go supra diff mount kit, you can weir kit it too

Beam good bushes good coil overs. Traction is down to good diff and tyres as well. There's loads you can to from moderate fast road set up right up to the sort of spec rod has. All depends on budget really

I saw the beams and wondered if that was a track only mod or a worth while one for a fast road car, whats the suspension of choice? I have koni's but they feel a bit wayward, that said could be the rest thats needing changed and it'll change it all

My car is still a road car, so all the changes I have done are suitable for the road. Whether you think it is worth the money is all personal of course. Personally I want the best handling that's still ok for a road car, so no rock hard suspension for me.

Sounds exactly what i want from mine, ive done the rock solid suspension on other cars and unless the road is perfectly flat its of zero use as it skips over the road rather than riding over n through it

Ive got koni adjustable shocks and koni springs and fully polybushed the car but it's still a bit of a boat. I want to fit coilovers and compression struts when I can afford it to see if that improves things

You not keeping yours standard anymore Darren? I've got bilstein shocks but they are far too soft so just ordered gaz gold coilovers

I can't say it has changed mine much but when you really go for it you can feel the front tyres grip.

No ive a ton of parts to fit adam, and when i do i want it to handle a bit better , alot more go and same handling wont work lol

Yeah i saw the Gaz Golds n wondered.... I run bilsteins with 40mm pistons in my daily golf . They are firm but not rock hard like the last coilovers i had, just hoped the gaz golds might do the same and be firm but not crashy

Coil overs I find quite frustrating as there are so many choices and too many are made just to get the car low and are of poor quality. I know the rally boys can spend over £2500 per corner so there is a huge range...not that you need to go too tot for the road. I suspect reasonable damping and good geometry with sensible Spring rates is what is needed. People often go too hard.

If you look at some of the greats such as scoobies, 205 gti, 911 996 turbo, Mitsubishi evos etc what made them great road cars was good compliance down a bumpy road.

Don't use coilovers on a road car.

Poly diff mount and make sure you have original bushes in the rear arms.

Good set of koni's and AB springs don't go any lower than 25mm.

Chamber shims on rear help also good tyres and set up.

I defo noticed the difference when i put a modded diff mount on my saff. The rear end seemed alot tighter.

Wouldnt use AB springs unless they have changed as they are not progressive

Well mines has uprated diff mount, fully polybushed, decambered back end, strut brace and bilstein shocks and springs and I think it's far too soft and roll poly.

I've been in a few cars with decent qaulity DAMPER adjustable coilovers and I thought they drove superb.

As far as I know Bilstein only make shocks and not springs. So what is the make of springs that you have? But I would expect that Bilstein shocks are quite a bit better than GAZ or AVO coilovers.

I have driven a 4x4 cossie with coilovers. At first I thought it would be to harsh. But when I drove it it was nothing like that at all! Very firm nice drive, brings the car to a level like the cars from today. I really didnt think a Sierra could feel this way. So now I now some good quality coilovers can make a very, very big difference to the car.

And my car has got AB springs, Konis, polybushed and PU diff mount. Still drives like a boat...

Mines 2wd but....

I've fitted a modded beam and gaz gold coilovers and it's pretty good tbh! Already had a good poly diff mount and solid beam mounts it all helps!

Koni also only make shocks. If it was supplied in a full Koni suspension kit the springs may have been made by Eibach.


@Wim, what coilovers where they? My car has about the same setup as yours. What do you mean by feeling like a boat? The AB springs and Koni shocks aren't really soft, or is that not what you mean? For road use I don't think they are soft, but last year when I was on the track I thought the setup could be a bit stiffer. But when coming home I found out all shocks were still set to their softest setting.
