Default £1500 for a daily, what to buy?

I'm selling the T5, it's going to take my license from me before long as it's shockingly easy to be doing three figures and to be quite honest I'm getting a little bored of it.

Requirements are pretty slim, needs to be pretty pokey, something that doesn't mind a good kicking now and then, and preferably pretty reliable or at least fairly cheap to repair. Petrol and manual are a must.

I'm looking at things like GTi-6 306's, Clio 172/182's etc etc. I've even considered a Primera GT but they're a little thin on the ground.

Not fussy on whether it's a hatch/saloon/coupe, anything is an option up to £1500.

Fire away!

Ben.

I know you said petrol is a must but have you ever driven a e46 330d?
Its the best car i've ever owned, its over 200bhp and still returns 45 mpg
Mine is a tourer so lenty space in the back
Parts are cheap enough and easy to get hold of
I bought mine off will pedley to get me by for a couple of months,
That was 2 yeas ago now, keep saying i'm gonna get something newer but end up just keeping it
They're a great daily driver

I ran a Clio 172 for over a year and it was brilliant. Buy carefully and they can actually be very well equipped and you will struggle to have more fun for the money.

Parts cost peanuts too.

Pug gti6 is a good shout, proton satria gti? Not too easy to find now, a friend has one which he uses on road rallies, very fun little car and nippy too. Fiesta zetec s? You could get a nice puma'd one for your budget.

Clio 172/182s are good fun and I've always fancied the pug. If you can find a nice clean example of either of them for 1500 you'll not lose any money on them as they'll all hold their value. Trouble will be finding a good 'en. An old Saab Turbo would also be on my radar.

Those clio 182's are pretty quick, had a little dice up with a cup one on sat on the duel carriageway in my mk3 focus st250.

I knew he was going to try and do me as he had been up my arse for a couple of miles prior to duel carriageway.
So in 3rd and waited for him to try and pass then i nailed it and to be fair up to 100 i was quite worried lol, at 110 i was pulling away and by the time i was pulling away nicely my mate pointed out i was doing over 140... Woops.

I think i learned him, but it also proved they are pretty quick cars!

I must say that doesn't surprise me. My 172 Cup does run out of steam after 100 but it is pretty impressive before that. They really are cracking cars for the money.

A nice 2005-6 Saab 9-5 estate with either the 260bhp turbo petrol engine or the 150bhp diesel turbo.

They are good little cars, my friends is standard apart from a cage and it has evo 8 front struts on it (you have to remove the anti roll bar to fit them) but goes great and handles very well, I think for more of them after a spin in it than I used too.

There's some high milers around, very good cars and can embarrass much more expensive cars with someone that can pedal a VTEC motor behind the wheel.

I loved my puma too. It handled really well with a few mods. It held its own against some modern cars.

I still miss it but i prefer my ST17O better. Its a nice comfortable nippy car.

I've had quite few cars that fit in this bracket, I'd be looking at a 6 pot E36 touring tbh. I had a 182 cup for a year and an E36, couple of E46's, Saxo VTS etc

unfortunately i have a fairly decent length commute now so I've got a pretty mint E46 320d touring (figured if it has to be diesel and boring it may aswell be practical)

E36 USA smart looking car, especially in sport guise. I was so chuffed with my e36 M3 when I first got it. Always fancied the wagon (but not as much as an E30).

Even though I'm a ford nut from a mechanics point of view I've said for years that I think the e36 Bmw was the best car ever made. Bold statement I know but I think there awesome. I've seen them with stupid mileage and still running like new. I motd one the other week a 328i and it had done over 300,000 miles and ran like new. Under the bonnet looked so clean and it drove perfect.

Look at Celica 190's they are surpringly good to drive and cheap for the performance.

If you still fancy a Primera GT I've got one for sale that's unusually nice a 1 owner GT LE.

I've heard loads of great things about these clios. My mate has a 55 plate Clio 1something (don't know anything about the sporty ones) and it's pretty rapid and handles like the proverbial to a blanket

I ran a Clio 172 for a couple of years, great little cars, only thing to really look out for is cam belt and dephaser as the service intervals is quite a bit shorter than the later 197/200's unless your capable of changing it yourself in which case you could really pick up a bargain.

I got it from a friend so we stuck a pulley and belt on for good measure. I'll get a picture of the original crank pulley too, fook knows what someone had done with that!

I'd got my next cheap fun car down to a Focus St170 or a Clio 172 and was about to go towards the Focus, now I'm not so sure.

Clio would run rings around the Focus, they're far quicker than the numbers suggest.

But the Focus is a much nicer place to sit, and better built. And easier to work on, oh boy the clio is shocking to work on.

I wouldn't work on it, well don't intend too. The biggest job on the Clio being the belt and dephaser I'd either try and find one done or potentially run it until it breaks. I would be at the bottom end of the market, I tried enquirering about one yesterday in Huntingdon but it's gone.

The other wild card is the mg zs or possibly a cougar v6 it only needs to do 2 miles a day and make me smile if I go the long way. I'm also tempted to take it up to Rockingham.
