Buy the Clio. Seriously.
The ST170 is a slightly nicer place to sit, but the Clio is just an epic little car. Buy a full fat (non-Cup) model and you can have climate control, cruise control, auto this and that, they're quite well specced little cars. I did £30k in my 172 in the year I had it and it was very reliable. Bits cost peanuts when they do break too. I (generally) found mine ok to work on. There are a few awkward jobs but there are on most cars.
No contest in my view.

that is the way I was leaning too - until reading up on them and it the clutches are really heavy. The one in my mini drives me nuts and if it's heavier than that it would probably put me off.

The clutch is heavy, but I found you get used to it very quickly. It never bothered me at all to be honest. If you drive another car and get back in the Clio, you notice it a couple of times, but then it just feels normal. It's worth having a go in one to see how you get on with it.
Don't get me wrong, the Focus is a nice enough car, but the Clio really is the class of that generation in my view. My 172 Cup took 30k in a year, with track days and B-road blasts and just lapped it up, even though it was on over 100k when I bought it. Parts cost next to nothing, a full set of OE dampers from Renault is about £170, the engines are tough provided the belts are done and you won't go faster on track for the money. Mine on Conti road tyres would take the piss out of MX-5s and MR2s that were on R888s. There is so much good quality tuning gear out there for them too. It doesn't take a lot to turn one into a real weapon.
You won't get more grins for the money. Mine is currently just tucked away because I can't bare to sell it, it really got under my skin.
I'd definitely recommend giving one a go.

Yeah the clutch is heavy, even more so than my big Volvo, but I'm used to it already. Do you have large feet? As the pedals are quite close together!
Mine is on Koni shocks and KW springs wound right tight and is still comfy enough.
