Default Track tyres for 2016

Gonna get some for next year, prices are low at the moment, from why I have seen I can get r888's for £120 r888r's for £130 and Dunlop dz03g for £185.

They will be on a spare set of wheels so only used for track. As u have michelins for the road. M
Which ones would you go for?

I'm worried that I will kill my road tyres if I try and go to hard on them and these are only 50% more so maybe having 2 sets is the way forward?

i have seen alot of people using these and federals, but at just £25 extra per corner i think i'll go with the toyos, although i would b interested if anyone has done a direct comparison between the nankangs and yokos or toyos.

see how do you define this?

im not being picky its just if i had a clear budget ceiling of £400 then it would be a no brainer, but as there are many other costs associated with doing a track day to save a little here and there at the expense of the grip is a little annoying for me.

having never driven on either i wouldn't know where to start?

R888 were very good, but tended to overheat after 10-15 mins and go all squidgy, Toyo were telling me that the replacement r888r do not overhead as easily and will maintain performance. They are quieter to comply with the new tyre regs so will become toyos road legal track tyre as the old r888 will be no longer road legal, not sure of the exact date as there is a grace period for change over and tyre stocks to be sold.

Kumho v70s I've always found very good, as grippy as r888 but more durable, usually cheaper than toyos as well.

Currently can get the r888r cheaper than the kumhos so might have a punt on a set.

if one is £65 vs £135 and it gets similar results then the cheaper option would be worth looking at

I did run the Kumho V70s but when I wanted a new set I was told they no longer have the E mark so cannot be used for road and track use.
Just had a set of Federal 595 RS/Rs fitted which have good reviews and are E marked so can be used to drive to a track and home again ( if they still have some tread left ) and only cost around £70 each for a 215/40/17 size.

You mentioned that you were worried you would kill your road tyres. It is worth noting that road tyres will FAR outlast the good track day tyres so if you want a long lasting set of tyres then use quality road tyres on a spare set so that you have road tyres to drive home on.

Track day tyres give far better performance / grip / handling but the down side is that they wear really quickly. The better the car is set up almost wears them out quicker as you use the performance that they offer more.

The Dunlop Ds used to last me 2 to 3 good, long track days where we shared a car and did roughly 100 miles on track. Pilot Cup sport 1s would last maybe 5 but would go past their best after about 4, I have not tried the Toyos but have seen many rave about them.

Tyre pressures are really important on track tyres

I hope this helps.

This could get expensive at 6-800 per 2 to 3 track days eek
