Just watched this episode, what an awesome car. I did get taken out in one once and was very impressed with the power delivery. Just makes u think how strong these cars are, was impressed with 170mph on the runway. Must be nice to have that much power and be reliable. Makes me think twice about my Cossie lol

A friend of mine has an E60 535d msport. Been remapped and pushes E39 M5's along no problem

Too big, too heavy although great for cruising down the autobahn, I was a passenger on the ring in one which spun at over 100 mph which in previous years even the barge handling cossie had taken the same corner at a higher speed, needed new boxers for sure.
It caught fire when we got back to the UK, split fuel line which was a real shame but it did save us selling it.

E39 m5's are great cars. For around the 7-10 grand mark I don't think there is a better car you can buy. If I didn't have my Sierra and bikes I'd with out doubt have one

e39s missed the boat on them , they could be bought ( ok probably the rougher ones ) Ł4k to Ł5k 3 years ago, now they are double that, and 12k + for good ones.

Agree that the E39 is one of the better looking 5 series shapes, mate had a 530 one but I'd imagine the M5 would be fun!

loads of good ones still about for 8-10! I know I shouldn't buy one as I have too many toys lol and my priority is fixing my Sierra but I still look

watched these mental vids years ago, but really struck home when sat in traffic one morning to little scrumbags on a 5 series tried to do the same with some horrific driving, dirty scum looked like koso's so no doubt had no insurance either.

Because of the torque, I estimate that around 100 MPH the M5 would pull away from it.

I went in an E39 and the thing felt so dated - they are so over-hyped on here. I was expecting so much but was left wondering what the fuss was.

e60 for me.

Had one of these for years, was always a car I wanted to own when they came out so I bought one as soon as I could.

I would agree with the comments about handling, its a heavy car, the brakes are definitely the worst thing about them, far too small. Its also important to remember that these (as with any old car) are dated vehicles (practically 20yrs old), you simply cannot expect to compare them to most things from the more modern generation. A brand new E39 would spank an E39 these days simply because it had new brakes, steering, suspension, vs some 15 yr old car that has been spanked everyday and now handles like a mattress.

Its a fun fast car, 5L 6 speed manual for about 8k for a half decent one. I personally always hated the E60, but again that's also tremendous value for money.
