Default Second Car

Hi all,

So the Bentley has now gone and been replaced with a Merc E class as a new baby means i needed more seats.

However i now am looking towards second cars, it needs at least 4 seats which excludes quite a lot, However consumption is not an issue, i would also really prefer 3 doors.

The budget is around 8-10K.

The cars i have been trying to look at are,

E46 M3 but really want non SMG
Golf R32 but i actually prefer the old shape around 5K
been looking at ST but not sure.
looked at things like fiesta zebec S as they are getting rarer and rarer.
I keep looking at XR2s for some reason but not sure its practical!

does anybody know much about R32s, I think its the most sensible choice. Also looked at Cupra Rs again and old shape civic type r but to be fair any Civic would have to be cheap and with the cuppa i think i would prefer the golf.

I am a bit confused so am looking for some opinions if possible.

The MK4 R32 is very iconic but not actually very good I believe. It's a heavy lump of a car and isn't that fast but, I think they look great and I'm sure it will continue to hold its money.

E46 Emm-Free is always a good but slightly predicable choice. I've had an E36 but never my own E46. Everyone I have ever spoken to who has had/driven one loved it.

Ever considered a Renault? I've got a lot of love for the Clio and Megane Sports, especially in liquid yellow...

Thats a varied selection of cars, how did an XR2 find its way onto that list with the likes of a R32 and a E46 M3?

lol XR2 got on the list because i kind of want one again as it reminds me of being 18. a stupid idea me thinks.

Saff cossie will just be a total money pit for me because i will want 500hp again in no time.

If the magenta one that C20 was selling on here was for sale again at the same money id be buying it but other than that just overpriced shitters everywhere, when you was buying minters for 5k its hard to justify 15k.

The R32 I've never owned a golf and just thought it would never lose money but i have heard they are stupidly slow but sound good.

E46 M3 im struggling at my budget for one in anything but grey as i really would have to have a manual.

I have looked at 197 clio, was quite close to buying a grey one for Ł4600 but non F1 and i think i would rather a larger colour as you say.

Wow, very confusing... Im now looking at MK1 FRS but they all seem so far away and 8k makes you struggle to get a half decent one.

How about a Mazda 3 MPs mate 260 bhp out the box.
It's a 2.3 turbo and they go pretty well in standard form.
Mk1 looks nice bit of a sleeper but the mk2 is a bit more refined with a lot of toys as standard.
for less than 1k you can be running about 320bhp.
They are a cracking car mate, I sold my my very tidy low milage mk1 frs to buy one and haven't regretted it once yet.
Don't get me wrong I loved my focus but got to the point I didn't want to take it out and leave it anywhere which is just silly plus they are all getting on a fair bit now and parts prices are just silly.
Plenty of parts to be had for the MPs and fairly reasonable if imported from America as they are very well loved over there.
The only major thing with the mk1 MPs is timing chain rattling which requires updated chain and tentioners to be fitted but most mk1 should have had this done.
I paid 9.5k for my mk2 with 28k miles on it but mk1 can be had for around 5-6k now.
They seem too be holding there money now everyone realises how good they are.

Ep3 Civic type r good cars,
reliable
parts readily available, cheap to run maintain

currently running one at the moment, milano red using as my daily cant really fault it.

only gripe is the steering feel is not quite the same as the renault sport clios cup's i've owned, but otherwise i prefer the civic in all other departments

Whilst you have a baby go four doors as it is a real pain getting them in and out of a 3 door, especially when having a sleep or worse when the tantrums start and they don't want to get in the flipping seat. Then when they get to about 4 you can go for a 2 plus 2 as they have short legs and can get themselves in and out and listen to threats of losing toys for a while if they won't get out or in.

Having said that I used to use a 911 Carrera for a while as my daughter just sat in the front but you could squeeze them in the back if needs be. Funnily enough your budget would buy a 996 911...lob on a private plate and the neighbours think it is a Bentley replacement.....I am amazed by how many people don't know one age 911 from another.

That's because the shape hasn't changed in about 40 years.
All joking aside I do love a good Porsche.
Do the octavia cars 2.0 Tfsi engines not suffer from serious oil usage like the Audi A5?

Personally id be looking at facelift ST's, shit load of bang for your buck, VERY safe as airbags everywhere iirc n-cap 5*...

And for 8-10k some serious low miler minters about and cared for heavily modded ones are a bargain.

... and it'll humble zee Germans, my op id get a five door although my 3door serves me well and I've had newborns up to grandparents in the back and it took it all on the chin and everyone says how comfy, spacious it is esp the boot...

You won't regret one, just maintain and enjoy the 5 pot
