my little A class A210 AMG Evolution merc....
I bought a cheap little weekend runaround last month since I lost the company cars after quitting my last job. £288 a year to insure with 0 no claims and 3 points for speeding.
A210 AMG Evolution, 141bhp 1100kg and quite nippy! standard AMG bodykit, 17" AMG alloys, standard twin exhaust, black leather/white suede interior, air conditioning, full years MOT , 86000 miles @ £1200...people laugh at an A class but its a great fun little car and it surprises a few people!
im thinking not to many changes just now other than a set of 18" bbs ....or possibly 19inch....? rear arches probably be sorted shortly by gibbys spray services in harthill to get it spotless as its got the usual rust bubbles on the rear arches...
im not sure what I can do to the engine yet. I don't think it needs much more power but every little helps!

they only made them for 3 years. 2002, 03 and 04 and theres only 140 left in the country so it took a few months to find one that was half decent! manuals the only one to have as autos well known for gearbox failure!
theyre surprisingly roomy inside. I can stretch my legs out in the front and back without adjusting the seats and im 5'10". the floor is totally flat from front to back with no transmission tunnel or footwells and oddly enough theres room for my 11 year old to lie flat out on the floor across the front of the back seat without crunching up.... the seats are quickly removable to turn it into a van....none of the electric windows worked when I bought it but a £20 control module from ebay fixed all 4! 0-60 is 7.9 seconds but it revs and pulls all the way up to 100 quicker than youd expect.

Clutch and gearbox are great fun to do on these. Once priced to do a clutch on one without looking at it then when i got on with the job i then realized the engine and box had to come out as they both sit on the subframe. Not a bad job to do but it takes a while to pull it in and out.

im expecting a few heavy bills along the way with this because of the odd layout. what would you say would be an average price to get the clutch done should it need it in my time?

I had the car on a 2 post lift and put 6 pallets under the subframe so i could just drop the lot onto that. Only lift the car up a foot away from the engine and box then look down the back of the firewall you will see 3 big plug blocks just undo them and then lift the car away. Then its just a case of splitting the frame away and the box will pull off the engine. From memory i think it took just over 4 hrs to have the lot in bits on the floor so not really that hard to do mate just a lot of work for the money i charged. When the guy come to collect the car he then told me merc wanted just shy of £1600 to do it and i only charged him £380 lol

Also if you ever need to change the starter motor that is also an engine drop job as they are also down the back of the bulkhead. Great cars but a pain to work on as nothing is easy to get at.

each to there own but I think theyre a cool little car and something a bit more interesting than the usual runarounds we see and as we can see people don't seem to realise that the AMG A class even existed! I wouldn't ever consider any of the run of the mill range of A class. it had to be this one or something else completely different.
plus you have that snob factor of telling people you drive an AMG merc.

0-90 in about 13 seconds....
the Haynes manual describes the clutch as a 4 out of 5 spanner job (difficult) but suitable for the experienced DIYer. thatll be me then!

My dragon in law has a diesel y plate a class, I drove it when it was newer. It's now a really sorry state, I've not seen a car as rusty for some time. I know they're a bit of a quirky car but I like them. As a runaround I like the driving position and a wheel at each corner.
Hers is middle spec and she's got the factory high mount bike carrier.
If she ever off loads it if be tempted to bolt nice wheels on it and tidy it up

Sorry to necro this thread, but I heard a remap on the 210 will take it up to 160 odd hp?
Would be very interested to see how it performed up there, especially it's new 0 - 60, as the A210 was renowned for being a Lukewarm Hatch...

im not sure about the remap, its something ill look at in future I expect after the usual upgrades. the standard 0-60 is about 8 seconds which isn't lightening fast but its go kart handling and quick reving engine makes if fun to throw around on country roads.
