Default Why does my Rev counter read 5k at idle?! What needs changing?

Just put a Mondeo 2.0 into our Fiesta MK3.5 Si. For some reason the rev counter reads 5k at idle and goes up to 7 to where it stops even when really it's only around 2k engine speed when revving/driving. The tach was still doing this with the 1.6 standard engine in and as far as I can see everything is plugged in as it should. What needs changing, tach or sensor etc? Not something I've come across before

Have you tried taking the needle of its little shaft or is it when the engine is not running, key out it sits a zero as it should do??

It's when the engine is running. We Mot'd it today and after driving it I've noticed it wont actually budge above 5.5k even when engine speed is higher, and won't go any lower than around 3.8 if I try to stall it. Even when revved at a stand still, its as if it's jammed going passed 5.5 but when engine is off, it sits right at the bottom where it should....Totally stumped by it, not sure if to change the dials?
