Well after having my e60 520d stolen off my drive last week and having little luck finding a runaround I've decided to buy another and hope I get what I need from the insurance company,
I now want an e61 (touring) and was considering the 525d as there are a few about, I'm after full leather, sat nav,auto box I will do a small amount of towing,
I cover around 3-4 k per year so don't mind a high miler as I will keep it for a while and looking to spend 5-6k
Oh and m sport
What I need to no is is it worth the extra tax cost for the 2.5 over the 2.0, insurance is not much more and I'm going to have to bend over next year anyway for it

On the saloon when I had one it seemed the other way around,
Started off wanting 525 but went for a 530 as more about and was the better option of the two.
Just save the money and buy a petrol 530i, quicker, less to go wrong (no dpfs turbos or injector failures) and you'll only lose 5 mpg and save yourself 1.5k on the cost of the car!
520 is cheaper to run, 525 is a detuned 530 essentially.
I'd hold out for a 530, I'd seen loads of good examples a few months back when looking for a 330d m sport, just to keep my options open.
The 6 pots are much nicer than the 4s
I know your looking for a 5 series but for what its worth, i just traded my 320D Xdrive in against a 335D Xdrive and they are worlds apart, the six pot engines are mind blowing, 535 would be my recommendation. The power they have and the grin factor makes the extra tax/running costs worth it every time. Last tank full averaged 46.8 to gallon, commuting and couple of decent runs out. Should get better as it loosens up a bit too.
The older 6 pots are nothing like that mpg wise though.
My 530d used to average 32mpg, 535 obviously worse they are well know for bad mpg but do go well with a remap for such a big car.
i run an e61 530d and an e92 335d
dont buy 4 cyl 520d its a tractor compared to the 6 cyl
if going for estate make sure all the tailgate functions work as the wiring breaks to it[not an if-but a when]
as said before on here check car comes up to temp-around 90 deg or it will need both stats
check it on a fault code reader as glowplug and or module failure dont flag on eml and wont let car do dpf re-gen...
make sure auto gearbox not too jumpy-try holding steady 40-45mph on a slight incline if its all over the place budget for a fluid maybe torque convertor change at best-valve block replacement rebuild at worse-you can live with it though and they all do it after miles to a certain degree tbh
mine is remapped no dpf no flaps etc and is nippy enough--but it isnt revved out that often-around 280bhp and loads grunt -but not as quick as the 335 at all
the 530i petrol is flat as a fart compared to the diesel on the road-torqueless lol and the petrol is a weaker engine prone to failure
my e61 is a great car for me-i do short runs mostly-it shows 27.1 mpg on trip-it is an actual 30mpg on brim to brim though[you can adjust its tolerance]
car will show 40 plus mpg on any run whatsoever[70-85mph]-so about 44mpg

Great info, my last one was a 520d but I fancy the 6 pot, I'm unserved if it is 2500cc or 3000cc?
After looking at a few cars I have put a deposit on one, decent enough spec but no xenon lights that I had before so I need to look into that, it's a 525d went nice and as said it feels more solid than the 4 pot, I just need to sort a towbar out for it
no xenons (cries).
nice m sport all the same though, i spent 2 years trying to find a 330d in the right spec, but had to settle in the end with a few features missing from my list.
i do quite fancy a 530d for the wife to cart the kids around in, plenty of room
Just fitted aluminium swirl flap blanks to the car, roughly 2 hours work and £13, it turned out it has the later 22mm plastic ones that I don't think cause a problem but better safe than sorry

Me and my mate did this when he first bought his, lucky we did as one was about to fall off!
Mine were fine, just a bit dirty, still glad it's done as I guess they could of gone at anytime!
I checked and it has the later vortex breather too but I'm going to change that along with both stats, air filter and oil in a week or too, garage changed the auto gearbox sump when I bought it
