Problems with my new saph cossie please help!
Hi folks,
Anyone on here fancy trying to help me out. I've just bought a sapphire cosworth from my mate who has owned it for 10 years. The last few months it hasn't quite ran great and he has lost interest in the car so I'm just trying to get the old girl running so I can drive to MSD for live mapping.
It's a 2wd saph but with a 4x4 engine fitted. Still has l6 ecu and loom but I noticed it had a pf09 tps so I ordered a pf01 and fitted it as well as 071 ford spark plugs gapped to 0.6mm and tbh it's worse.
When I got it she idled at 500 rpm and nothing's changed apart from now it struggles to rev and misfires terribly. Won't start unless using heavy throttle. The AFR gauge is erratic and jumps from 10 to as high as 17 in an instant. Garage stinks of petrol. I've tried to check for air leaks and have put new ptfe tape on the plastic vacuum fittings on the inlet as well as the brown air temp sensor. I've riggled the cps plug with no difference and did the same with the dizzy plug I even put wd40 in the connections.
Also when it idles at 500rpm and I disconnect the idle control valve it makes it worse I think, sometimes cutting out.
I dunno if I need to setup the tps or not, tbh I've did research on this and still don't understand how to adjust the damn thing.
Sorry for the big speel but can any cossie gurus please fire some suggestions to me and I'll investigate from there.
(4x4 lump, fully rebuilt 7:5:1 comp, standard coil, blue ht's, t3 turbo, dark greens on stage 3 chip just incase it helps)
Thanks Adam

Did they change the pins round on the tps to run the pf09?
If they did then you will need to swap them back. I'm under the impression it's the two outside wires but I would get clarification on that first
Just a guess

in addition to the advice already given, the afr readings going from 10 to 17 quickly may just be that it is way too rich and the sensor can't read that low. sometimes it causes a misfire and shows as being lean, common error made unless you know what is happening.
map sensor is a good call though, if it can't read a vacuum it will just assume full throttle off boost when idling and that will be mega rich compared to what it needs with no throttle or very little.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I think one of the new spark plugs is goosed. Unplugged no4 ht lead and made no difference but been on my own today so couldn't see if it was sparking while I was cranking the ignition. I dunno how else to test a spark plug but using the multi meter no4 plug had higher resistance than the rest.
Checked the gap of the cps and was 0.75mm so within range also cleaned the end as it wasn't the cleanest.
Used the multi meter to test various sensors and these are the results...
Main power check on ecu between pin 19 & 20 found 11.45 volts
Map sensor voltage was 1.54v
Cps was had a resistance of 638ohms
Tps was 4.99v when throttle closed
And 0.45 when open
Going to contact Matt Lewis to send the plugs back. Any way I can test the map sensor?
Thanks very much for all the advise

I'll give that a try Paul, I think the map sensor voltage at the ecu was too low cheers

UPDATE
Right guys, cars running pretty good now replaced the brand new 071's with ngk's gapped at 0.75mm. So no longer sounds like a Subaru.
Only remaining problem is the 500rpm idle of which I've unplugged the iscv and it made no difference so going to strip it off and try clean it up.
Thanks for the help so far

She's running like a dream, took the iscv out which is less than a year old and gave it a good spray of wd40 and blew it out with the compressor. Now idles just below 1000 and revs brilliant with no hesitancy.
Next up fit new group a coil and loom then off for mapping so I can start enjoying cossie life

Hiya, glad you've got it sorted. You have saved me a lot of trouble as mine was misfiring/only running on 3 cylinders after it was serviced..... I had new 071's too so this morning i swapped the plug from one cylinder to another and the problem followed the plug. So hopefully new plugs will sort. Could you let me know what ngk's you used please??? I think someone mentioned on another thread that there were some dodgy 071's around at the mo.

Hi mate I got the ngk's from halfords today, just took the 071's with me to compare the length. I actually fitted the same plugs to my other saph about a year ago and there still good. I've tried uploading a pic of the packet to photobucket but it's not loading.
Look for black writing up the top right hand corner of the packet saying BCPR6ES. With the trade card I think I was something like £9.
I got my 071's from Matt Lewis so going to contact them to send them back or even get the £12 I paid off of there sensor kit I want to buy.
Good luck with yours bud!

Thanks mate that's great. I did go to Halfords, stupidly expecting them to have some, obviously they didn't! I'll pop back in there tomorrow with an 071. I got mine from Matt too. Probably just a dodgy batch as I've found him really good with everything so far.
