Can only run straight veg on old dervs with the mechanical fuel pump. - my old mk2 mondeo endura engine ran it no probs as did a mates escort mk5 with same engine.
Newer cars wont run it as the tolerances are too small.
On the fly-by-wire cars (ie 2000) you can run bio diesal which is processed veg - ran that in my X reg astra for years.
I prefer bio as you dont have to fuck about with used veg like i used to, and its price it not that far off new veg oil unless you can go cash and carry and get it mega cheap

I used to run a pug 205 diesel on veg oil from aldi when it was 27p a litre and it used to run on it without diesel , getting used oil from chip shops , curry houses and so on involves a lot of heating and filtering and that then bumps up the cost .
You used to be able to buy a filtering machine off ebay for about a grand but it would take ages to get your money back unless your doing starship miles .
Stick with buying fresh oil from the cheapest place you can find and all will be well .

As said already - common rail does not like it so anything TDCI - do not run it.
Also, I never bother heating the oil in my mondeo. Just turn the glow plugs on a couple of times and fire it up

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
i used to get bio from a local farm who made lots of it and sold it for 70p a litre which was great - used it in a mk 3 Golf tdi. Then the farmer sold up and now new houses occupy the land. sad times. i found him by chance, he had an ad in a local paper.

filter used oil through 2 sets of tights then its fine. I used to send my West Indian mate in to the local shop to only buy a pair of tights and nothing else -the looks he got was priceless

cool thats initially what i thought dude, just filter used oil and thats it!!
its a golf 1996 tdi! i would like to think it would fire up on 100% veggie oil without pre loading the lines and pump with diesel 2 minute before i shut the engine off!

some guys used to mix veggie oil with a mix of diesel (50% mix i think) in winter months as veggie oil would get too thick but as you have 2 tanks you are fine. There is a VW TDI forum that will be of use to you.

For all the hassle unless it's free I wouldn't bother, just run it on normal diesel until you find a decent supply of free oil, remember you still need to pay road fund duty on it (if you use over 2500 litres) so unlikely I guess

I used to run my old 2.5di transit on new veg oil. used to turn up to Costco, load about 200l in the back and then stand there in the carpark tipping 60l in the tank with a funnel
that was great up to about 75% diesel and 25% veg, it actually returned more to the gallon! any more than that though and the mpg plummeted and it ran like shit.

A friend used to make his own bio diesel to get round all the running issues and efficiency issues of pure veg oil.
Worked great. Although he stopped doing it a few years back as it was too much work for saving 20p a litre or something daft.
He turned a shed into a complete conversion plant. Was quite cool plus he ended up with loads of soap as a by-product which with a small amount of diesel in it made a great free alternative to swarfega. Probably not safe on the skin though
