Any vxr monaros about?
Well been thinking about one of these for years ever since I went to oz and have decided now is the time to itch that scratch.
I'm looking for a 6.0 vxr silver or black and reasonably priced. I have looked on eBay, autotrader etc but am open to anything. Be a bonus if it had stainless pipes on it

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Have you driven one? I was like you and wanted one for a long while, until i drove one and just found it very dissapointing. It was a mildly tuned 6.0 vxr and it just felt quite slow, big heavy and it was just awkward to drive. An m3 or rs4 is light years ahead in every way imo. I have other friends who have driven them too and had exactly the same opinion as me.

Yes really.
For a start, both the BMW and Audi are about double the price, and both are aimed at a more sporty market and far more developed cars.
The Monaro is just a big lay cruiser.
There really is no comparison between them. If you have the wrong expectations of a car, of course it will be disappointing

I think your missing the fact that it was marketed as a performance car.. just like the HSV etc (VXR8), just the same as the C63 AMG, E90 M3.. they both have Big V8s yet a lot more rewarding to drive.
when i drove one i had no expectation and still left disappointed.
Maybe the UK guys didn't market it as a "sports performance" car, but bottom line is thats what it is. The HSV /VXR is even more so sports orientated and yet i find them equally disappointing. Yes a half the price but also half the car imo.

PassionFord Post Whore!!
so a car with 500+hp with a big v8 hp isn't aimed to be sporty?

When he visited us from Australia I took him out in my 450bhp 2wd Sapphire and he said he thought it felt quicker than a V8 Holden.

My Brother-in-law worked in Holdens factory in Elizabeth , South Australia in the HSV department where they are made . For the money you do get a lot of car but they are never going to be in the same league as the AMG Mercs or M BMWs but look at the difference in price.

Yes they are a different pricee range but no different to the corvettes, the Dodge Hellcat etc which is an amazing machine, so you wouldn't compare a Hellcat with 700hp to a C63? Of course you would, its trying to hit that market with home brand prices.

And therein you prove my point. You think they have 500+, when reality on a good day would be barely 400+
With an unladen weight of 1800kgs, they are no lightweight, nor a sports car, and new they are half the price of cars you are trying to compare them to.
Other than them all being cars with wheels and engines, there just is no sensible comparison. Totally different markets. And as the Monaro is a relatively cheap car, if something goes wrong it will be a much cheaper fix than the German machines.

I owned one in red from six months old (Ex-Vauxhall demonstrator). Owned as my daily for 3 years and couldn't fault it.
Really big car for a 2 door coupe and can actually fit two adults in the back seats unlike my current XKR which is also a big car, but couldn't even fit any small kids in the back seats.
The handling is surprisingly excellent for such a big, unsophisticated car.
Only problem was the attention it attracted. As it had got rave reviews on Top Gear etc, people would stop you literally everywhere and talk about Top Gear and ask all about the car. The Aston Martin V8 Vantage I replaced it with was for more posh and four times more expensive, but it didn't attract anywhere near the sort of attention like people coming over to talk it petrol stations etc. I guess it's similar to an Escort Cosworth or a green Focus RS in that respect as it's one of those types of cars rather than being anything "posh", but it meant I was always uber-careful where I parked it.
That said, one in silver wouldn't stand out that much and it's been a long time since they were new and on Top Gear etc.
Would definitely recommend one though. Surprisingly economical when you want it to be as in sixth gear at 80mph on the motorway it's virtually idling! Could get 28mpg on a good run and managed to break the 30mph on the one occasion I actually tried to do an "economy run". On the other hand it was very easy to get that down well into single figures if you pushed it. I averaged 22mpg over 3 years.

Price is neither here or there for me in this comparison.. As Top range Hsv here will coat you over Ł55k thats the same money as a new M3 etc i know thats not relevant to this particualr car, but they are not that far away that you cant compare the Holdens to thr german cars etc

M3 has 414 hp and the C63 has 450hp so not exactly miles apart are they.. I guess i need to tell all the people i know that tune them up to crazy power and race them that they are using the wrong car to do so as its not a sports car or in your mind a perfomance car.

And then to try and compare to very heavily modified race cars ? WTF ?
People race trucks too, even lawnmowers.
Monaros aren't fast, they aren't sports cars.

Your argument makes no sense, when it was advertised as a sports/performance coupe. So for you to say its not a sports car is rubbish.
The modified refrence was to you claiming its not a sports car but yet many people build upon it, so again if its not asporrs car im sure theres plenty other cars would make a better foundation to mod and race etc
Regarding the price i already stated it wasnt for the manaro so again failing to see your point and why you had to point that out.

thats because it is quicker, weighs a good few hundred kilos less with not much less power.

Thats what my point is mate, the hellcat 65k usd which is around 45k? Thats easily comperable to a C63 etc just because its cheaper in no way means you cant compare them.

how has the comparison even started??
vxr monaro is a sports car, it's not a 2.0 diesel at the end of the day.
does it handle like a flagship m division BMW or amg division merc? well no, of course it isn't, but it doesn't handle like a Renault scenic either.
move along chaps, not a slow machine and will sound lovely for very little money, i did look into them before settling on the bus.

So their base platform are all sports cars too ?
A performance coupe is a far cry from a sports car.
Next you'll be comparing a big heavy Aston Martin to a 911 GT3 ?
One is a Performance Coupe, the other a Sports car.
