Quick query on the output shaft on my 4x4 box, from looking at the build diagrams am I right in saying there is a small shaft that fits to the mainshaft of the gearbox that holds the drive flange? If so can this be easily replaced with the box in the car?

Some swine has cut my shaft down to fit the earlier hex rubber doughnut rather than getting the correct front end of the propshaft and the newer thinner doughnut. As the hex doughnut is knackered I have had to replace it with the newer style and matching prop but the shaft will not centre properly as the gearbox spigot has been cut !

So can this part be replaced easily or do I fear the worse and the gearbox is coming back out again...

yes you have to take the rear transfer box section off the car (about 15 bolts) undo the 2 rear gear cradle mountings then remove from the gearbox, then take out the VC, then just knock it out and replace

Ok great, I'm assuming you need to remove the driveshaft flange first? The only reason why I ask is I've seen photos of the transfer case with the flange and shaft still in place.

The bext question is where to get the shaft from? CTS wouldn't sell one unless the gearbox went to them and they fitted (which I can understand) just means I have to take the gearbox out which I'm trying to avoid and the journey to them!!

yes the flange is held on with a big nut 36mm I think, you will need a long reach socket and an impact gun is best to get it off


to be honest the chew you will have doing it its just as easy to drop the gearbox

I'll have a look mate, I blew a gearbox up whilst racing In 2012 and I've got most of the bits in a box will look to see if its there
