Escort Mk3 Carb conversion
Hi all, i'm new to this site and not a great mechanic so just need a bit of advice.I have a 1983 Mk3 Escort estate with the 1.6 cvh engine. The carb is crap so am looking to upgrade. I've been told so many different things but a high lift cam and twin webbers seems like a good option. Can someone please advice if this would be a worthy upgrade ,what exactly i will need and where to acquire the parts. New or second hand. Also would there be more of a budget option ? thanks Andy

Cheap option - bike carbs. Never had any experience with them but have seen quite a few conversions over the years.
Carbs wise, Weber DCOE 40 carbs are a popular upgrade on the CVH, there is another carb that is better but more sought after (Weber DCNF) due to the space/gap at the bulk head affecting flow. That, a Kent cam and a good exhaust would be a good start, with a RR I was quoted roughly 130 BHP... next limitation is the ignition system. Megajolt is the system I was told to buy when looking at mine.
But... A set of twin 40s would set you back £250-300+ depending on condition and manifold. Then factor in the exhaust and cam if you go down that route - might be cheaper to drop a Zetec engine into it, swirl pot and ignition system (edis/trigger wheel) etc etc
