Default Cossie in garage fire. Gutted. :0(

so, offshore yesterday, missus messages me in a panic, garage is on fire. Long story short the consumer unit blew and set fire to the roof timbers. VERY fortunate that it didn't spread into the house and nobody was hurt. If she wasn't home we wouldn't have a house left.

I'm insured with the RSOC, owned the car 19 years, it's got an awful lot of melted plastic on the roof/bonnet and looks like shit. Sad as it is it's part of the family.

Right off you reckon? If not, any body shops that you'd trust with it? Is on original paint besides bonnet.

Should be saveable I would have thought. 19 years seems enough reason to try and restore it, perhaps the house insurance will cover it

House insurance won't touch it. It's laid up so still covered for fire/theft damage.

No, the policy lapsed, I had loads of shit on at the time and didn't renew... Was probably only a couple of months by the time I renewed. Was happy to get it covered again though!!!

Assessor coming out on Monday. If it's getting repaired I need a decent bodyshop for it, ideally someone that gives a shit about old Ford's. :0)

Couldn't agree more re the family and house, could have been a billion times worse.

Need a good body shop recommendation though.

If I was you if it's only paint work damage I'd look into fixing the car yourself. An insurance claim on it will go on record and affect it's value

I'm highly unlikely to ever sell it, so if it ends up Cat D or whatever i'm not arsed.

It's not like it's been structurally damaged, it's all cosmetic and all the worse as it's 90% original paint.

Ive got a spare slam panel where the wipers are if you need it. It might need a paint cause it has silver over spray on the edges.

Cheers fellas. Assessor been out today, gave me the impression he had no idea what he was looking at. Checked the tyre depths etc?? Told him it was off the road for the winter, rang me back later to ask what model it was?!? Reckons it needs a full house and glass.

Starting a new thread re values, expecting a debate with insurers on the horizon.

I'd say your mad there most likely wright it off. You could end up really affecting the value of the car. Fair enough you may not be fussed now but one day you will be.

I'm mad? How so? I've had the car 19 years, it will never be sold, so why would I care about it's future value?

I had no intention of re-painting it, if the insurance repair it, great, that's what I've been paying them for. If they right it off, i'll buy the car back and get it repaired back to how it was.

I know that it's never been structurally damaged, it's all cosmetic.
