Always remember being in my dads 2.8 turbo capri at 140mph back in the 90's and having one stuck to our bumper, pulled over and it easily pulled away, awesome car. A chip takes them to about 420-450hp. Brodie Brittain racing used to offer 500hp conversions on them. There's one in Sweden with a claimed 1000hp.

You can tune them but they tend to blow the head gasket once you turn the boost up and you try getting parts for them! Parts and head gaskets aren't as easy to come by as Cosworths The exhaust is very restrictive as standard so changing that gives good gains but you can't de-cat them because they smoke heavily on idle due to the lack of back pressure. They are best left alone.

They are great cars, search lotus omega on youtube as they were sold all over but not as the carlton. Some big power ones out there too. 180 odd top speed as standard

Had one in at work around 1998, had the stickyest set of Dunlops ive ever known! Tech compared its performance to a Ferrari 355, remember speaking to a Top Fuel driver at the Pod who owned one, said with a simple chip it was good for 500 bhp and crazy performance!

I was lucky enough to have a passenger ride in one when it was just a couple of months old.
Think they were something like 48k new at the time.
What an awesome car!
There is just something about them
I am 99% sure it was the one Paulo now has but I could be wrong.
Would love one even after all this time

Hi Paulo

This was in Stepney East London.
That number plate sticks in my mind like glue lol.
It was the 1st Lotus Carlton I had seen on the road and really stood out especially being parked in Stepney.
I was walking past with a mate when I saw the car and pointed it out to him.
He said " that's my solicitors car" without batting an eyelid.
Next thing the suited and booted owner appeared and my mate promptly sorted us out a ride.
Was bloody awesome.
Just googled his name and his initials are JJH so could well be the same car but I could be wrong.
Just love these cars
Look after it mate and wish you all the best with it

Hi Terry,

I think it's the same one because I just pulled out a copy of the old log book and the first registered keeper was a Julian J Hopley, what's weird is that isn't a private plate on the car that's the original plate.

Paul

was he the original owner? as you can spec / pay for the plate before its registered. Not so common back then. But seems to be these days.

Yes mine has only had 2 previous owners and he had it from new. When I bought the car I thought the plate was a private plate but I checked it and it's never been changed.

I'm pretty sure my M3 was never registered on a correct plate either and it started life on a private plate.

One of my all time favorite cars .
I would love to own one.I wouldnt care if it drove shit, big, heavy tbh,its just one of those things .
Iirc Matt Baxter also said as he was contemplating buying one at some point.
As any cool super car to mere mortals there is always stories about them.I remember one in Furbers/Transplants years ago with i think an engine fire,Oh plus the one that was stolen whilst left running on some ones driveway. It made the tv news as it was out running the Police helicopter in Brum lol.Rams raids and dumped in the canal iirc.

That Seny is coool as imo .It looks great, not out of place .It just looks right but its so , so different

Hi Paulo

Its 100% the same car.
Was almost brand new the last time I saw it.
I had a stage 1 3door at the time which I thought was fast lol.
This thing was in a different league
He didn't even go mad but you could just feel the power.
What a lovely car.
Look after it mate.

Hi Terry,

I thought so after you mentioned the initials and I googled him, I was informed that he was a city banker but it's close enough. I am just surprised that he let the plate go with the car.

The car is a keeper mate even though I've only covered 20 miles in it so far, I plan to get it back to how it should be and the car you remember It's not bad now to be fair but it does want some tidying around the edges.

I've had a stage 3 sapph and this is quick I'd love the engine out of this in my M3, that would make the perfect car.

I think that was probably the same one, yes. I had my first Sapphire Cosworth at the time, I was 21 and pretty pleased with myself............. but I still remember thinking how awesome that Lotus Carlton looked.

I remember one in st helens that had a vinyl yellow and blue retrim with polished wheels...seen it parked in mally's scrapyard one day about 10 years ago but never seen it after that.

Also one in warrington on a driveway on a main road that was just parked up, never seen it move for 2 years then it just dissapeared about 5 years ago.
