Volvo C30 D5
I've had a few threads asking about different cars over the last few months.
There's been a bit of uncertainty in the company I'm working for with a risk or redundancy and the possibly of having to work hundreds of miles away. Times of changed, work is coming in and local work too! After spending most of last year and much of this year doing 180miles a day I've been put on a site just 3 miles from my house!
I've been fancying a change for a while but been worried about spending the money doing so.
At the time I bought my Mondeo I was 19, insurance was an issue and I settled with the 1.8TDCi. Now with a few mods it goes pretty well and sounds okay too!
But my insurance continues to fall and my urge for something with 5 or 6 cylinders and a bit more performance has reared it's ugly face again.
I didn't realise until I was behind one the other day that the C30 was available with the 2.4 5pot diesel lump! A C30 D5 would be a very good compromise between economy and power and the D5 with a decent exhaust makes a very nice noise too!
I asked some questions on a Volvo forum a week ago and received no replies at all!
So I thought I better ask here!
I was wondering if anyone knows how reliable they are? Did Volvo ever sort out the oil dilution issue after?
Although I'll be getting a full stage 1 remap with an EGR & DPF delete I would still like to know if it's likely to have done any damage in the past.
What sort of fuel economy do they get?
If I could get 45-50mpg I'd be more than happy!
How reliable are they in general?
Do you hear of many turbo/injector failures? Obviously there is the standard DMF that you get with every diesel these days.
Also, timing chain or a belt?

Every experience I've had of modern Volvos is electrical faults galore. Pain in the arse for it. Bear in mind there an absolute pig to work on so if big things do go wrong like clutch, flywheel, turbo etc expect big labour bills!
Have drove one went pretty well tbf but such a big lump at the front of a little car Only 4 seats aswell!
ETA Belt driven, change due around 110k

PM what you want to know and I'll ask on a couple of Volvo forums I use
Do you really need a diesel though?

110k isn't too bad! If whatever I buy is over 70k or so il probably get a full service done and the belt change.
There is a Volvo specialists about a two miles from me so any complicated electrical issues I will get them to sort.
My Father had a V50 T5 and it never put a foot wrong over 4 years and 105k.
I'd love a V50 D5 but my Girlfriend said no because I need to be 'individual'. I picked, specced and ordered the V50 for my Dad!
Unfortunately a diesel is a must. I suppose I could get a 2.4i or a T5 but I'd have to convert them to gas as I usually do 20k/year.
My biggest worry with the D5 is the oil dilution issue with diesel getting into the oil during a regen. If I get rid of the DPF it won't be an issue but I'm worried it might have done some damage in the past.

i use a a volvo xc70 d5 for work...its a belter of an engine. cars done 177k and motor is sweet as a nut. xc70 is heavy and it returns 35/42mpg. that engine in a small car with a remap would be pretty lively. belt change at 100k.
