Default Buying Mk1 or mk2 Escort for 10 - 12K

if you was buying a mk1 or mk2 escort for around 10 - 12k would you go for a good standard 1600 sport/ RS / Mexico / Harrier? or something thats been modded like a 2 door thats had arches and zetec or other engine fitted etc

I have a mate thats looking to buy a car soon and a few of us had a bit of a discusion in the pub the other night

he dosent want to start racing or anything just something that can be driven now and again and taken to a few shows etc and that will hold its value or even creep up a bit

whats your thoughts?

Personally I would go modded and have fun and worry about resale at the time I was gonna sell it.

If it was an investment I would say an original unmolested harrier or similar

Most people buy a car to enjoy it not to sit there and make more money on it to sell on at a later day.

Get a nice cossied mk1 or 2 escort.

You'll get a mk2 rs2000, a 1.6 sport or maybe even a mk2 mexico for that money (will be the hardest one to get hold of), reckon anything cossied will be more, have you thought about a rally car and just using it as a fun toy? Seen people like Jason Lepley often have a clubmans spec car for under 10k, they recently sold a mk2 with arches etc and a 1.6 xflow for 8500, that gives you bit spare to personalise it or tone it down into more of a road car
