FAO Painters - when to apply clearcoat?
afternoon all, not a car, but i am in the middle of painting a bike frame for my daughter using halfords rattle cans.
now for the clearcoat it says to let the colour dry, then rub down the paint with 1200 grade to get rid of the sheen then apply the clearcoat.
someone else i was speaking to said to paint the colour, leave it 15 mins then put on the clearcoat while the colour coat is still tacky.
if doing the second way, if there were any runs etc then obviously your buggered and cant rub them down etc.
i am inclining to go with what it says on the cans and finish the colour coat, dry, rub down and clear coat.
just after a little advice really!
cheers chaps

If the colour your using is a non gloss colour then paint that first let it dry then clear coat over the top, you wouldn't be getting runs in colour coat as you only apply thin coats. Hope that helps
