was reading the list earlier, i know one of the blokes that weighed in the FRST too.

i did read 7000 escorts went, the way i see it is that you had to of owned the car 2 years or more, maybe thats why there were so many fords

Why am I not surprised it is Ford lol.

For a long time they were one of the most affordable cars therefore the sheer amount of them is greater anyway

It would be better if it gave it as a percentage eg

18% of Fords is the same as 3% of Audi's etc

Breaks my heart seeing some of the cars on that list, granted there was a lot of shit, but a skyline GTR, audi Quattro sport etc etc, even in poor condition they are worth more than Ł2k!

I noticed the other day how mk6 escorts have almost completely gone. Bar mine I know of 2 in my area, I see more mk4s then 6s now.

Went my local scrappy and there was everything there bar a mk6 in the ford area xr2i, sierras, xr2s but no mk6s!

Shame they were scrapped but hopefully the parts made it back out!

A MINT xr4x4 was scrapped during the scheme in my local scrapyard also a nice red xr2i and a black lancia 8v turbo

Strange aint it! Last time I went for a proper look in a scrapyard (was a couple of years ago mind) it was nothing but mk6 escorts! There was a load of them, obviously they are all gone now though

In all fairness most mk6 escorts were heaps of shit even 5 years ago so its hardly surprising? That list in an interesting read though!

The whole scheme was one of the biggest conns ever, sold and advertised by the government as doing people a favor when in reality the only people to gain out of it were the government through the tax received and car manufacturers through the elevated cost of finance on a car bought through the scheme.

As an example, a girl i know had a knackered rover worth nothing with the standard head gasket issue and though i can get 2k for this POS. She went round to all the car dealers in hemel asking about the cheapest new car they can do. Armed with a calculator and adding all the monthly payments up of the higher rate finance she discovered she would have been better off just buying a new motor outside of the scheme overall

The only way i could see someone saving is if you had the all the money in the bank already, but then again if even before the scheme as a cash buyer if you couldn't negotiate a hefty discount on the list price then you probably deserved to be conned!

I weighed in a 200K+ miles audi A4 with a wheel bearing gone, some paint damage, needed engine mounts, steering wheel melted, and that needed an exhaust and was due a belt, it was literally worth hardly anymore than nothing, if sold it would only have been for spares, I bet it wouldnt have fetched more than 500 quid as a whole car on ebay.
The 2K for it went towards a new toyota aygo, that we go some discount off in addition to using the scheme, there is NO way that we could have negotiated the other 2K (or 1500 if you knock of the 500 the scrapped car might have been worth) off such a cheap car in the first place on top of the discount we had already got.

So I dont agree that it never made sense, without a doubt in some instances (where the new car was cheap and where the scrapped car was going to be scrapped anyway like was the case for me) it was worth doing.

My Mum changed her Ford Escort Mk2 around that time and we actually sold it and got more for it than we would of got with the scrappage scheme. To be fair, Mum's trusty Escort (owned for 30 years) was in good condition, MOT and being used.

I was very surprised how much the car was worth, I did think it's worth Ł500, but luckily it as a 2 door and I was shocked how much we got for it. Technically my Mum got more for it than she paid. Also, the good news is it stayed on the road so too speak, as it was too good to scrap.

Funnily Chip, my Mum got a Peugeot 107 (cousin to yours!), it was just time my Mum had more modern, safer and easy to drive car.

We got a good discount on our new car, would we of got such a good discount under the scrappage scheme, I doubt it, as someone mentioned if they used list price as guide, we got about 2k off list anyway and still had the money from the Escort to put in the pot to buy the new car!

Fair enough in that instance, you clearly made use of the scheme, but i think people in your position were a minority really? 99% of people would have bought on finance.

Another person i know chopped in a perfectly good clio for a new mini which all she did was moan about how much it was costing her a month, especially after the main dealer prices for all the bits it apparently needed at the 2 year service. Im not saying it didn't need them but that she was suckered into something she couldn't really afford thinking she was getting a good deal.

Suppose that was her own fault really though for not thinking about it more?

You considered chopping in a decent mk2 escort???

At least you had the sense to check what they are actually worth first!

I wonder how many cars worth alot more than 2k that were traded in were actually sold off for a profit somewhere down the line? I know there was supposed to be a cert of scrapping or whatever it was called but every system has loopholes

I think people buying cars on finance often only really enjoy the car for the first few months where they feel they like have a new car for only a few hundred quid a month, then after that they get annoyed still paying the same amount to drive around in what is now an old car!

Personally new cars dont generally appeal to me, as they are normally such poor value compared to a year or two old or more one and we only bought the aygo new cause my mum wanted a new car with a deent length of warranty and with the scrappage it came in at such a good deal.
Also I do actually like the aygo/c1/107 etc a lot, its one of the best designed cars ever IMHO in terms of properly meeting its specification brief so well (which in this case isnt about style or power its about being affordable, fit 4 adults ok, be great on fuel etc), I like all the little touches like only the glass opens on the tailgate which means the rear can be more rigid for less metal, and then cause of that it only needs one strut to open cause its lighter etc.

Agree, Chip you just do the best deal at the time. I nearly made a big mistake with our Escort Mk2, but an eBay auction opened my eyes to what it was really worth!, Also luckily the first owner had it undersealed from new, sensible option box tick!

We love our 107, it is just a basic cheap car, in many respects like our old Escort Mk2 Popular!, but we didn't want aircon, as some cars have standard and as you say seats 4 perfectly. It is so easy to park in town as well. Like you I wouldn't of bought new, but we just missed out on year old one, but funnily enough few weeks later dealer offered more discount and we got a new one for same price as the year old one, it's all timing buying cars. I must admit I do prefer your Aygo shape to ours in hindsight, but other than that they are great city/town cars.

My brother worked for a car dealership during this time and he loved it, He didn't sell cars but he worked for parts, the amount of times a car came in to get scrapped with alloys and ended up getting scrapped with steels on lol, sure he got some parts off the better ones too lol.

Amazing to think how many cars got wiped out as part of the scheme though really put a dent in the runabout market or cars worth 200 quid etc!

Scrappage scheme was a joke. It makes no sense to buy new. The huge majority of people that did the scrappage would have been far better off financially selling their car and buying at 1 to 2 years old.

My mrs buys a 1 year old car every 3 to 4 years and saves a fortune on what the car would cost new. Certainly more than one the 2k.
