Default Experiences with Q plate cars

Does anyone have any experience of owning Q plate cars? Been offered a cheap mk 4 escort convertible, the only problem with it is it's been stolen recovered and is on a Q plate as a result. Thanks.

Suppose it depends on the reason it was Q plated. Although I have never owned one I do know that there is a question on most insurance sites that says is your car a q plate so it must be a risk factor.

A vehicle is Q plated when there is no date of manufacture

Yes, but that could include:

There is a stigma attached to them due to dodgy practices in the past (cut and shuts and so on) but the reality is most now are well put together, the issue being mainstream insurance is a pain and it makes people look twice!

Have they abolished the whole Q plate thing now? I also wondered if it was possible to out on a private plate into a Q car, as long as you took it off before you sold it?

Nope the Q plate has to stay on the car, Q plates cannot be assigned with a cherished plate.

I was under the impression that the whole Q plate stigma had gone now. Contacted Adrian Flux and they'll insure it no bother and for a fairly low price as well.

Looks like I'll have another new car soon then . Even the other half is okay with it.

Ironically had a q plate mk3 cab back in the early 2000's complete with illusion kit painted in Porsche baby blue. Yes, it was horrific!!!
But no issues with the car or insuring it at all.
Some good things are Q plates run 1973 emissions laws so (obviously not in this case) decats etc are fine, they were often stolen and not seen for years hence ending up on a Q so often in good nick and as said above insurance stigma is long gone.
I sold mine on to a lad who ended up a few months later on the same q plate but with a much newer (mk6) escort cab. Turned out he was caught out on the newer car with finance and wanted the original id to disappear. What a lot people don't realise is a q plate is issued at the age when the car is registered as a q, not when the car was originally manufactured as of course you no longer really have that info as most likely if you did it would not be on a q so as mine was registered as a q in 1995 the logbook simply stated "ford escort 2dr, year of first registration 1995".
Dodgy I admit but hard for a cop to prove since the car was q plated anyhow.
