What's the budget? For a mk1 escort your going to need deep pockets, even for a 4 door. Budget option would be a mk2 fiesta I'd say, or a mk3 escort. If you can afford a bit more then get a mk2 escort 4 door. If your minted, mk1 escort rs2000

Will he be able to handle a rear wheel drive car. I just wouldnt want you to spend good money on a mk1 escort and then for him to loose the back end and crash it.

Personally I would love a mk1/mk2 escort but as said above unless he has been driving a few years best getting a fiesta as its FWD, I know if I had a mk1/mk2 escort as my first car when I passed I would have it in a tree the back end on them is lively!

Mk4/5 Cortina is a good shout, if he gets a 1.3 escort he should be ok with regards of the back end, it wold have to be a very wet or icy road and he would have to be really trying for the back end to step out.

Graham Gary George my first car was a mk2 1.3 escot. The back end on that was easy to get out no matter what the weather was like.

Unless your Son has a lot of money I would say forget the Mk 1 Escort, even rough ones are making silly money. How long has he been driving? Insurance costs are again a killer for younger drivers. Check out how much his insurance will be for say, standard Fiesta etc. When I bought my Son his first car the insurance was nearly twice the value of it! Start small and cheap, let him get a few years of accident free driving under his belt and then maybe move on to something a bit sportier.
Cheers Richard.

Both of these guys have it nailed, Capri would get my vote I think, a matt black mk3 slung low over a set of banded steels with a lairy Pinto.
Although I'm also very partial to a nice mk4 Tina!

Mk1/2 Escorts are silly money, regardless of how many doors/spec.
