Default how to check a coil pack?

the mondeo won't start

it's got fuel as i've changed the pipe fixing to see if it stopped the leak and it has, i've got a new pipe on the way to be on the safe side but now the car won't start

so with no fault codes logged in the memory i'm now looking at the coil pack, leads and plugs are new and "working" so other than it being the alarm fault, which is going to be a pain in the arse, how do i check the coil pack to see if it's working?

got to be at work in an hour so can't even run to the scrappy to buy a replacement to check so short of calling the AA what else can i do on my own?

Does car crank over, have you got a spark?

If you have had fuel pipes off have you given it chance to pressurise/fill the lines?

You need to ascertain what is actually first.

As said does it crank, and if so is fuel present?

Everything is present
There is fuel
At the rail
And the return
But it's just cracking cranking cranking without actually during
Our even coughing or indeed sputtering

Could it be cps related?

If the fuel pump is running ON CRANKING I would say the CPS is working.

Need to see if it has a spark, and if the plugs are wet of fuel or not.

no idea if it's working when i'm cranking it, it would appear that way yes as there is fuel coming out of the exhaust (the smell of it anyway) and the fuel rail is full of petrol as well

but the cps only provides the ecu with data on when to fire the plugs doesn't it?

CPS/CKP signal (whatever you like to call it) tells the ECU/PCM that the engine is turning, without a CKP signal the ECU will not allow a spark, or switch on the fuel pump/pulse the injectors.

If the fuel pump is running on crank, and there is fuel (need to know , not guess ) but no spark, then I would be going down the route of checking that the coil has power on the centre terminal. I have seen some Fords have a short on the wiring loom and it blows the fuse that feeds the coil.

Should have 12v + on the centre coil terminal with key on/cranking.

As has been mentioned once or twice, need to know if there's a spark or not.

It's probably easier to verify if the coil has power anyway, as that's easy to do by yourself.

So the next step is to ascertain if there is actually a spark, I would not jump start it personally!

Our ST coil pack 'packed' up, it ran like a bag of knackers, kicked spluttered and undriveable.
I used a jump lead on thread of spark plug with other end clipped to the battery -ve. This way i could turn engine over without needing to hold spark plug (eg one man job).
Good luck getting it sorted.

With a flat battery how else am I supposed to check?

Or should I just spend a few quid on a replacement to see if it's the problem?

It's not the key as I've tried my other one and exactly the same thing happens

I don't think it's the coil, I have never known them to just stop working.

Were you just replacing a hose? I assume you have gone back over what you done, i.e. not plugged something back in etc.

Jump starting a modern car is not a good idea, too many sensitive electronic devices that can be affected by voltage spikes imo.

I've jumped our ST170, Escort GTI, 1996 Mondy, alfa 147, 156 etc numerous times.
I know what you mean about sensitive electronics, all over my borothers 2013 kia it says dont jump start, call your emergeny providor instead.

It was working
I changed the end on the fuel pipe from the tank
It was still working
The next day I went to start it to check that things were OK and there was no leak and it didn't fire, just cranked over
The coil would appear to be working so until I do the full check tomorrow I'm not sure what else it could be

ok, it does this from the testing of the stuff from the link, and seeing as the battery is a bit flat and i can't jump start it these are my findings

the plug in the loom does what it's supposed to do (with the pump unplugged to stop it from killing the cat)

the plug on the coil pack seems to not

the leads are reading 20.3 between 1 and 4 and 2 and 3

the centre coil pin to the outer reads 50.1 on one (looking at the pin the one on the left) and then 2.3 on the other side

does this mean its buggered then?

It's easier if you just verify if the spark is present or not!

None of the tests you have done verify if the coil is being switched or not.

replacement scrapyard coil pack and the car runs

it would appear that no fuel in the system originally, plus new plugs and leads and constant cranking terminated it's life, for whatever reason

and don't forget, i was getting my 8 year old to do the cranking when i was doing the testing and although my next move was going to be removing the plugs but several seconds of black deseasalness exiting from the exhaust soon sorted that out, been for a run and it's all good

Happy Days then.
Our ST170 coil pack (same as Mondy one i think) new was £26 from local autofactors.
Petrol / LPG keeps our cars running as well
