Does Ford use the same kind of systems and colors for cables across the range?

In the Sierra at least the trigger is negative, and the control wires to the central locking motors were yellow & white on the left and yellow/black & white/black on the right.
If there's a brown wire, it's the ground for the motor, and the one left is the power. You can try grounding the white and yellow wires to make sure it's negative triggered, and also make sure which wire triggers locking and which unlocks.

Then, if it is like that, you only connect the 2 wires from the unit to the respective trigger wires of the motor, ground the other 2 in a suitable location, and leave the rest unconnected, as the manual tells you.
