Default Cutting out a car floor & chassis legs!!

Hi all,

a change of plan with my project now means I am replacing the floor pan in my sierra, including the transmission tunnel. Now I dont have much knowledge with regards how much stress it will take, and when it would bend. Does anyone know how I should brace it, using what, where and how the car should be held up, as I intend cutting out the inner sills too.

And my second question is regards removing the inner wings, as I plan on drilling them out, wire wheeling inside the box section, painting it, and re fitting it, and I am unsure what is most important when welding it back in, as I need to make sure the strut tops are the same distance apart as they were before, what else should I do to make sure it all goes well?

Thanks for reading this, and any advice is of help, bar scrap it.

Some pics of what I am going to cut out, and what I mean regards removing the front inner wings:

Cheers

Nope, I'm just making sure I do it right first time, so it is perfect and my rust ocd is cured knowing it aint creeping back through seams, and box sections rot from the inside out etc

Cheers for the advice

With the inner wings I am removing them and using the originals from this car, but the reason I'm removing them is because the seams are splitting due to either rust or the fact it is a rally car and stress has split some of the spot welds. Wondering what I am to do regards when I put them back on? I will plug weld them, but how should I get it lined up correctly, and get the angle of the strut tops perfect etc?

if you remove them properly with out beating them to death getting them off they should line back up with the old spot welds ,clamp them back on ,can always make a jig that bolts from a few points to line it back up ,and get a angle gauge shouldn't be to bad unless your unpicking the hole front end

Brilliant! Will also have a look at angle guages too. Wont unpick the whole front at once, will try and do it in sections to reduce flex!

Would add rep, but can't

Hi
I need to replace my inner wing complete with chassis leg of my Sierra Sapphire 4 door saloon.
Can i fit one from a 3 or 5 door hatchback ?
I know the front wings are different.
Or would i need to modify them in any way to fit the Sapphire wings ?
Cheers

I don't see any merit in removing the inner wings because some spot welds might have split. Getting them off is likely to stretch or tear them, and painting inside the chassis legs and then welding is a waste of time as the heat will burn the paint off anyway.

I'd redo the welds, either spot or seam is your choice, then get loads of rust inhibitor into the chassis rails till it drips out.

For the tunnel, you will see two seams that go across the car, one just in front of the centre crossmember and the other about 6" in from the bulkhead.

I opened those and fitted my 4x4 tunnel in the same place, with overlapping joints running fore and aft in one of the pressed indentations.
