Default Ford Ka 1997 Tappets Hydraulic or Mechanical

Hi all,

I have a ford car with a tappety engine and wondered if the Tappets were hydraulic or mechanical.

If they are adjustable, what should the clearances be?

Cheers
Dave

If you need to adjust the shims (solid lifters) or clearance etc its not as straight forward as saying it has to be this or that. You need to measure the clearance between lobe on the cam and valve when the valve is shut with a feeler blade, find out what is should be and subtract the two figures to get the difference in spec. then either get shims to compensate and make up the difference or adjust the clearance till the correct spec is achieved. If you have to start messing about with shims then it gets quite involved. But if you willing its just simple maths to work out what you need. If you have hydraulic lifters then there is no adjustment they are self adjusting. Ka's are tappy as feck anyway, arnt the early engines based on a 1960's ford anglia engine

It's mecanical tappets on a 97 Ka. Endura E engine. The way I've adjusted them before is just use the haynes recommended gapping when the valve is fully shut, ie rocker arm is up as far as it'll go. Just rock the car in gear to adjust them, simples

What he ^^ said they are solid lifters, the Endura E is a good reliable engine albeit old in design, yes it is basically a revamped Kent engine with engine management and FI. The Sport and Street are the only models to have a different engine that being the Zetec-Rocam. IIRC the new KA has a different engine.

Depending on the mileage adjustment doesn't always makes then as quiet as they could be, this is due to severe rocker shaft wear, apply pressure to the rocker as you set the gap pulling the rocker up to take up any slack that exists.
You can also dismantle the rocker gear, take out the rocker shaft, turn so left is right right is left then rotate 180 degrees, will fit back perfect but this puts the unworn side on the bottom/underside where the pressure is so you have a "new" surface with no wear.

Thanks for the replies. It turns out the engine is a pushrod engine which suprised me a little but nice and easy to work on so it's sounds better than it did now

The rule of 9 won't work with a Ka engine. The firing orders different (i.e not 1-3-4-2)

Edit: IIRC anyway

Quite right, rule of 9 does not work on this as firing order is 1243 not 1342.
