Default oil pump help

hi people i hope someone can help.im looking to buy an uprated oil pump for my cvh turbo xr2i conversion and wanna know how to tell if my block is an early or late type as there is two types of pump.i bought the short block from a guy and have rebuilt it with new rings etc but need to know what year it came from.
ive been told that putting some washer in the pump helps uprate pressure too wondered if anyones done this and if so how and is it safe?

any help would be greatfully appreciated

Is there not a casting year on the block, i believe 1986 onwards is a rotor type oil pump, not gear.

On the front mate, at the bottom, near sump, inline with the middle core plug.
Should have two digits relating to year i.e 88
