Default symptoms of gearbox syncros wearing out?

as above really i put a post up in the cold spell that my gearbox was being a real pain in the arse to get into 1st and 2nd now it's warmed up a little and i'm still having major problems when the engine is cold to downchange into these gears, i found sometimes double clutching does help but not always, i'v also changed the gearbox oil because i thought it could be that causing it but since changing it it's got worse .

whats peoples thought guy's and thanks for the advice

P.s what grade of oil should be used in the mtx75 gearbox i'll check the bottle but i just used what the motorfactors recommended won't be the first time there computers could be wrong

It's a quite common problem with older MT(x)-75 gearboxes in the cold. An oil change might help, not necessarily though. Use specific MT75 gearbox oil as supplied by Carlube and Comma. Don't bother trying your local Ford dealer as they don't stock it anymore.

If you put in normal gearbox oil, I'm not surprised it got worse.

Double clutching on upshifts (+ blipping throttle on downshifts) only helps if you match the revs exactly. With a bit of practice you can learn it.

I wouldn't worry too much as it will get better in warmer weather and the syncro rings will most probably still last many thousand miles until it gets really bad.

Is the clutch ok? How about cable/linkage adjustment? Does it go in and out of gears with engine off?

cheer's peter that's some sound advice and it has comma gear oil in it that's what they advised but it still had an ep rating but it was an unusual one can't remem exactly, and it's getting quite bad whilst cold i just can't get second on the downchange at all and it won't go into 1st till i'v come to a complete stop, after a few minutes it eases still quite notchy though, my clutch is some cheap shite that i thew in whilst i wasn't working to get it on the road.

i might just take a week off and do a box change with a recon and the lower arms, exhaust, valeo clutch or summit with a bit of biting power and brakes, i'm still toying with the idea of making into 4x4 and putting a mk1 4x4 box in but will give it some real consideration before i put my mind to it.

god now i look at it it's making me think of how long it's gunna take esp when i know the only place it's getting done is on the floor at home

and rich yea it's getting the gears whilst at standstill with engine off or on it's a 10,000 mile old clutch albeit a shite ebay one, have noticed it gets hot very easily, it's a hydrolic clutch mech so shouldn't be many prob's there i replaced the csc when i did the clutch, but i did set the linkage myself and always though i'v set it slightly to far to the right a little making 1st and 2nd a bit of a pain to get when cold it does seem quite fine when hot after a long run like going to london.

if it's worn the brass bits of the syncro tend to wear out and they simply stop grabbing the other part of the gear they mesh into after they've slowed the gears down

change the fluid to see if this solves the problem, and yes, you have to use mtx75 specific fluid, not the stuff ford tell you to put intot he box nowadays as it's wrong

Euro Car Parts still sell it:

Changing to that should help as it's much thinner than regular gear oil (similar to ATF).
