Default Motorsport engineering courses?

Thinking about going back to college to do this, was just wondering if any one has done it or has any recommendations on where to do it?

My mate is in third year at Derby - good mix of practical, common sense and rigorous disciplined engineering.

where abouts are you based?! The gf is currently doing her level 3 imi national deploma at northbrook college in shoreham airport this year (her 2nd year there now) and next year shes doin her foundation degree.

Dont know about up north but down south i know brooklands college is good which is in brooklands or northbrook are on their 3yd year of teaching it now.

The thing i will say is its a very acadamic course, you have to be up to speed with your maths, physics, electronics and IT to A level standards!!! Loads and loads of theory etc infact more theory than practical so you have to be prepaired for it, and decided if its definatly an engineer u want to be as they have had alot of people thing its on par with doing a mechanics type course and its not!!

Quick word of warning for you as its left me doing a gap year this year.
The motorsport college course I did for the last 2 years only got me a National Diploma. For some universitys to do an motorsport engineering course A levels are required in Maths and Physics as well! This means a short course yea has to be done for these 2 subjects before you can be eligiable.

Thats what I found for me anyway, always read the small print before its too late!

At the moment Im living in the Republic of Ireland but wil be moving back to the UK to do this course.

I am ideally looking for somewhere around London to do it as I have a family memeber who could put me up here.

I am looking at a 3 year course in Kingston university, anyone got any info on that course?

Well i know Brooklands is supposed 2 be a really good college to do it, McLaren used 2 pay for staff who wanted to do it to get a qualification motorsport engineering but at the time i didnt bother as it was part time over 3yrs and didnt think i would be there that long, nearly 5yrs later i kinda wish i had now

Its near Woking in Surrey!!

I done the course at Brooklands in Surrey right next to Brooklands Race track and just round the corner from mclarens new place.

it was good but i would say get work with a race team aswell and get out in race enviroment. somthing in the Touring car support series is always good and gets you meeting loads of people which opens doors.

Good luck

what qualifications d you have mate? i'm level 3 qualified IMI technician and last year they said that wasn't enough to get on to the degree course

I studied there doing Automotive engineering...as stated the maths, physics etc etc needs to SPOT ON!! Dont think I would have got through it if I hadnt of got the 'help' I did LOL!! HOwever the last time I did maths was at GCSE so was a bit rusty! But got put onto the non-honours course, for 6months while doing the catch up with the maths side of things...once that was passed I went up to honours and job jobbed!

Course is good...learnt alot...but dont expect it to be anything like learning how to make a 500hp engine...more kind of why things went wrong and lots of theory on aerodynamics and fluid motion and dynamics ect!!

Some of the motorsport guys used to be quite snobby at us 'auto eng' lot as they genuinly believed they were better than us...I earnt their respect when I out talked them into alot of theory about aerodynamics and performance tuning etc etc

One complain I do have about Kingston...well I have 2...the first being the teaching is appauling!!! There are some clever lecturers there however, the structure of the course made me wonder what my tuition fees went on!! Coursework being given out after its meant to be, things going missing, teachers not sticking to the module guides, one teacher even went on about his personal life in more detail than the module!!!! The head guy when I was there was Dennis Marchant....was a RIGHT ****...and I mean a right fookin wancker! He had it in for me just because I drove a modified car! Couldnt believe it! Class A prick!

Second complaint...there aint enough girls to add some scenery LOL!!! The Kingston Hill campus is only down the road and if you want some fun...you wont be leaving Penryhn road or Kingston hill for quite some time I would imagine haha!

I was always led to belive it was mclaren, been a few years since i was last down the way but it was down near the large tesco store i remember the name Byfleet coming up on sign posts not sure if thats where it was or if Byfleet was further down the road.

Interesting area and it open my eyes to how wealthy the area is coming from the country side with nothing but farms and old tractors, at the time i was there Tom Chilton was on the course along with some other names in motorsport.

I'm at Staffs uni doing a foundation degree in Motorsport Tech. It's ImechE accredited, and is a mix of practical/theory.

Currently on a 9 month 2 day per week placement at a race time running two funcup cars, a mini cooper s, then various other projects such as kitting out trailors for motorsport use - rebuilding a fiesta for track use. Single seater Formula Ford cars too.

We're out couple times a month from March, with track days in between. As well as a nice trip to Spa for the 25hr funcup race.
