Default 1.8 Si Zetec 1997 Escort Aux belt run HOW?

Do you know the way the auxiliary belt should run? Haynes manual offers no photos or help at all.

Had to pull engine to bits in a hurry last week or so ago.

Mate helped, but is not around for rebuild. He took auxilary belt off and didn't note the way it fitted.

Spent nearly 2 hours under, over and around the car today - all outside - and still can't figure how to get it on right.

Any links, photos or descriptions gratefully received.

Thanks and Happy New Year.
Tim

Yes, sorry.

Air con and power steering.

Alternator is at front of car and low down (I looked at a mate's Focus but his alternator was at rear and idler in different place)

Not a crazy idea; I drew it out twice and sat on the pea-shingle and scratched the old head. Thought I had it figured but didn't. Drew it again - still no joy.

Yes, you are right again.

The ac is lower than the alternator (ac at very bottom, alt about mid way up), but the alternator is at the front (I'm sure because I dropped a bit of power steering fluid on it which made me swear a bit !)

Just going to look at the link Ronnie,
Cheers

Thanks Ronnie,
But it's not the same as mine. The alternator is in the wrong place in your diagram.

On mine the alt is below the Power steer and above the AC and just slightly forward.

The tensioner is above the crank and to the right (as looking at your diagram) or to the front of the car. Just above the tensioner and slightly right is an idler pulley)

Looks like the Zetec on my mate's Focus though.

Wish I knew someone with another escort 1.8 Si 1997. Don't even need to take a cover off really to get enough of an idea.

Cheers,
Tim

That Ford TIS cd (never heard of it before), but it sounds pretty good - where can you get hold of one?

As this car has done 120k and I don't intend on getting rid of it (spent so much time on the old girl now I may as well keep on working on her whenever is needed). Welded in 2 big chunks of subframe during summer - did a good job too - the car has to keep going now with all that time spent on her. Totally filled the interior rails with wax oil until it poured out (which I collected for later use again).

The inside of the engine (had a good look unfortunately last week) looks really good - no wear on cams or followers at all to speak of - I do change the oil very regularly and have looked after her.

Anyway, thanks again,
Tim

no problems, thats what we are here for. The ford tis can come in handy sometimes!!, may be worthwhile downloading a copy, it is handy for things like that and for wiring diagrams etc
