I gave up smoking yesterday 6/12/09, Any tips?? **updated*11/12/09!

I thought i'd start this thread on me giving up smoking on the 6/12/09. i've been quite a heavy smoker for years, but cus me an the misses are a bit skint at the moment, I thought this may help.. i've tried 3 times before an not suceeded but I want to do it this time.. So your help is greatly appreciated and any tips you may have would help me as well.. I shall update this thread everyday until i'm satisfied that I have done it.. although today I have found it rather easy.. thanks for looking, mat 8/12/09 at bloody 1.42am I've woke up about 5,000,000 times so decided to get up, feel like i've had an overdose of caffeine, funny that cus i don't drink coffee or tea or anything with it. I know its only a temporary thing so i can live with it. don't start work till 3.30am so it a bit early hence me being on ere. thanks for all your posts so far. mat, more updates to come. 8/12/09 14.12. home from work well done a days work with no fags, not to bad really. feel like i could punch f*ck out of the boss for not tracing the debtors properly as usual. or maybe I should burn the office down with them in it,.... god this is hard. i'm so bloody stressed. 9/12/09 18.16 home from work again Been a great day today, haven't really wanted a fag all day, just wanted a nice cold glass of water. mind you I have to say my taste buds are back already, had a mars this morning and loved it, never realised how nice things taste. an already i feel like i have so much more energy. so speak tomorrow. thanks for ya replies. 11/12/09 15.14 just back from work I can't believe this, I feel like someone has just switched the want for a fag off.. I just come on here, looked at what i've posted this week and thought to myself, bloody hell, i forgot that I smoked all day. haven't needed one at all.. this is so easy to give up. all you have to do is decide in your mind that your ready. an you can do it.. 11/12/09 21.24 just had a fag Cant believe i've done this, I got a right smack in the face by the 'i've got no fags' fist earlier an went out an bought some.. pulled over on the side of the road to light it, like ya do when ya trying to pack up, sit there like a muppet thinkin 'do I do this or not'.. but I did light it, drove off took a ferkin great drag an coughed an done a 5 finger spread of sick all over the misses's dashboard in her pug... So fuck that, i'm not letting one slip up ruin the fact that i've not smoked nothing in nearly 4/half days except that drag.. so i'm feeling a bit down, and my coat smells of sick.. and i've now had to clean bits of sick out of the heater vents on her car.. all that sh*te just cus I wanted a fag. never again

good lad, i gave up 2 weeks ago saturday. Ive done it a few times before my longest has been 3 years but always seem to get back on them, not this time though

well whats an average pack of fags that you buy per day cost?

work this out to how much youll save a year, thatd make me want to quit

say £5 a day x 7 for a week = £35 x 52 for a year = £1820.

easily another granarda for you there or furnishing a few rooms in the house etc

i gave up just over a year ago first few weeks are hard then it gets easier from then on

just dont put ur self where you will want one

phone you doctors and tell them you want to go on a smoking cessation.
i went 2 weeks ago and they sort you out with patches and them inhalers on a free perscription,they can also perscribe you other drugs to help you quit too
they dont reccomend you going cold turkey because your likely to fail
i find that the patches are really good i tried loads of times without help and never lasted longer than 24 hours but ive not had a smoke in 2 weeks using the patches and it hasnt bothered me in the slightest

no no, cold turkey for me i'm afraid.. managed 3 weeks a few years ago by doing it this way.. so if i can manage 3 weeks then i can do it.. mind you, i'm at work from 2.30am to about 4pm, so its quite easy then, it will be when i get home an the misses and little baby is annoying me.. but i'm back in bed at about 8pm. but thanks for that though. i did try it through them once before, but the appointments just don't seem to fit in with a normal persons lifestyle.

When I stopped I put the price of my cigarrettes in a glass jar every day so i could see it building up. No excuses, every day. The shop doesn't give you fags if you don't give them the cash!

Decide on something nice you would like, say £150-£200, and then when you have saved enough and can treat yourself to it "for free" it will be a big encouragement just about the time when you might be slipping. (That's why it shouldn't be too expensive or it will take forever),

And I'd give the patches or the wee nicotine pipe thing a bit of consideration, especially if you can get them for free. The pipe may be best if you think smoking is just a habit and need something to keep your fingers occupied.

And if all else fails, thinkof the baby. S/he doesn't need immature lungs full of secondhand smoke - I could kill someone when I see arsehole parents doing that!

Baby also doesn't need parents that can't walk up stairs without getting breathless or dying early!

try not to go and pay for fuel either as that's the biggest risk

i went on the tablets from the docs for the first 2 weeks worked a treat ,didnt want to smoke it was much easier as the first 2weeks are the worst after was plain sailing

I used nicotine chewing gum, worked a treat, i couldn't have gone cold turkey, I drank black coffee for a week or two as well.

I've not smoked for 4 years but I get through two packs of Airwaves black mint a day!

Just tell yourself your not having another fag whatever happens.I failed a couple of times myself,got to 6 weeks once,had a tab and hated myself straightoff.Finally said no more and iv been like that for 27 years.

I stopped for three years then started again about two years or so ago..... I had good reason to start again because I thought I had nothing to lose after being diagnosed with a medical condition!

But what stopped me after 10+ years of smoking in the first place was Allen Carrs Easyway to stop smoking. It works on the mental side of smoking, which the nicotine replacement methods don't. It's very good too and well worth a read, because it's the mental association rather than the actual physical addiction which is the hardest thing to shake off.
The physical withdrawal pangs from nicotine are so slight you don't really notice them, it's just like an empty hungry feeling, which is why some people put on weight.

If you can keep delaying the first fag of the day it's quite easy. I did try a couple of weeks ago and managed 24 hours but I was so giddy and light headed (probs because of having so much more oxygen in me bloodstream), I had to have a fag cos I was dangerous!

Gave up in the summer from 30 a day. Woke up one day and decided I didnt want to do it any more. Got to substitute something else for it. Sounds strange but everytime I fancied a fag I had an apple or an orrange, got through shit loads of the stuff! Still it was something to do on fag breaks whilst the others smoked. Dont try to avoid smokers, keep that habit the same but have something else instead. Thats my advise. Best of luck, first few days are the worse as everyone says, after that you wont be bothered by it.

Been 4 weeks for me as i've got back in the gym and am on a mission to tighten my body up. I suggest going to the gym and running. Get all the crap out of your lungs. You'll feel better within a week and your lungs open up alot more

Cant give you much advise m8 but i did give up 4yrs ago, got up one mornimg and through my fags in the bin...never looked back and feel so much better for it, it will be hard but keep at it

The initial few weeks is the hardest.

I used patches as I thought the gum was rank! The hardest bit for me was the habit of doing something with my hands... get a load of lollipops and have one of them when you feel you want one.

Also, don't get drunk! That got me..

nice going just stopped myself 20 a day for last 20 years , now stopped for 8 days and 10.5 hours , taking dog a walk and ffelt a bit rough coughing my guts up and i thought sod this and cheucked the fag i was smoking, not done the usual stuff of moving the fags etc as my wife smokes , i feel tempted a few times a day but once past that i don't think about it for ages , keep it up

Good on ya mate. i'm on day 4. Had a big big night on Thursday, and woke up Friday and realised i went through a whole pack in a few hours, I didnt even want to smoke that day, so i figured, may as well have a go.

Out of habbit I find myself getting ready to pull into garages to get smokes, never do tho.

unless you want to quit, you wont, you will always find an excuse to have one.

it takes about 3 days for the nicotine to be leached from your body, after that thigns will start to get better

if you just go cold turkey you will find it toughter to go the whole hog, but afterwards you won't have to tell yourself that it's because you've been using a substitute

will power if the strongest thing you can do, my gran died from a lung infection and so did one of my close mates, but my gran was in her 70's and my mate was in his 20's, but my gran died from old age and my mate died from cancer

it was more than enough to make me not want to even go near a smoky enviroment ever again

one other thing my maet has done is to sit in the pub and breathe in through his nose and breath out through his mouth, big deep breaths, and he imagines that he's smoking, but after a ew lungfuls he says he realises what he's got and what he'd be doing to himself and that's it, teh cravings go away

but he's been a non smoker now for 10 odd years

I gave up 2 1/2 years ago... It is difficult but you've gotta find something to do.. I still chew gum (just the usual wrigleys stuff) buy a 25 pack box and just try and get through the box in a day... You'll be surprised!

That helps a lot... But be prepared as the one thing i notice piling up was my wieght..

Still now i'm glad i did give up, one of the best things i've done!

TBH I never found the "cravings/pangs" or whatever you want to call them addictive, and all this nicotiene in your system nonsense never effected me. The whole reason I smoked was because it was a habit, there is a difference.If you look at the psychology of smoking you'll find that it's all based around this, you will always smoke in certain situations, i.e boredom, watching tv, when you get up, when your in a bad mood, the trick is to realise what these are and plan to avoid them, otherwise you'll just end up starting again. Addiction may play a small part, but i can say for me it wasn't the case. I still have the odd fag when i'm pissed, that's an example of it.
