Default Tax codes? "married mans tax" ?

Does being married with a child effect how much tax you pay?

brief story; chap i work with was married in 2007 and has a 2 year old child. now i have more qualifications and responsibilities yet he's taking home more money per month than me. I asked my manager who said he'll check with wages department which he did and i was told he pays less tax due to being married whith child, his wife doesn't work either.

Last week we had our wage slips where it turns out we're on the same tax code, 474L i've done a bit of reserch on the internet but as ususal anything government or tax related is over-complicated, but as far as i can see being married and having a child will make no difference???

can anyone advise further before i tell my boss where to shove his job?

your right....being married and having children does not affect the amount of income tax that an individual pays!

there USED to be a married man's tax allowance, but the government scraped it so there is nothing in the system now
same with kids

you can apply for child tax credits if your kids are looked after by a registered child minder, but that is checked against the money you pay to the childminder and then on the amount of tax they pay to the government, so you can't get away with havigng not to pay for child care over the holiday's or if the kids aren't there because it won't work

we had our previous childminder get royally fucked by the tax man for £4k in unpaid tax on using her motor to pick up and drop the kids off during the week from school and their homes so they stopped childminding and went on the dole

doji you can apply for tax credits just if you have a low income mate,,, childcare is a fucking rip off though,,,, was quoted 130 quid a week to collect my child from school and i collect her at 6pm,,,,, then the cheeky bitch said " dont worry on holidays i charge half as much per hour as i will have her longer",,,,, she wanted 350 quid a week to childmind over the holidays and when i quized it she said " the government will pay 75% of it and you pay the last 25%,,,,, typical example of people doing Legal benifit fraud IMO, rape the tax benifits from people who,,,, in the end will be the ones footing the fucking bill

how much care will she have for my child when shes too busy trying to find scams for more money

yes its called tax credits,, it cause kids cost money and if they dont offer this then he just wont bother going to work,,,,, generally it works out roughly getting your tax back but its the same amount paied weather you are paied 12k a year or if you get paid 28k a year,,,,, after that though you dont get fuck all so dont be asking for a payrise as you get paied less pmsl

i used to get this till the missus went back to work,,,,, then we got fuck all !!!

He will get child tax credit and depending how much he earns working tax credit as well
but i am sure it don't get paid in with you wages our child tax credit goes into our bank account
If you can see his wage slip it should be easy to see where is is getting the extra from

the only pitfall is that you have to pay it first, figure out how much it is, call them up to work out the figures with them, then you give them a weekly figure and they work uot how much they are goign to give oyu back

for example, we get about £500 a month back after shelling out nearly £1300 a month

i'd rather pay the £800 a month and save the £500 but it don't work like that

also, when i was earning nearly £60k a year, our child tax credit allowance was something like £22 for the year, so we didn't bother

thats well interesting to know, cos last month we did identical hours, yet his take home was more than me, and as i say my manager said it was because he paid less tax due to being married.

but it seems there is no married mans tax and tax credits are credited after wages.

so basicly he's on more money than me !

When I worked for Tuffnells, we had a thing show up on our pay slips as mobility allowance. My manager said it was due to spending a certain time away from base, but when I checked it on net, couldn't find anything like it, only mobility allowance I could find was to do with being disabled. Didnt say anything about it tho, cos it worked out that for gross of £350 a week, we took home £320, and pretty sure I should have been paying more that £30 for tax and ni.
