Smile Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDCI - Noise From Back

Hi

I have recently got a 2.0 TDCI, it is a 2004. It drives well, but I have recently noticed a noise which seems to come from the back somewhere. It only happens at around 55+ MPH, and it doesn't seem to do it all the time.
My daughter was in the car the other day and she thought it sounded like an aeroplane.
I am an amateur with cars except for driving them, but I think it seems to be coming from somewhere around the back axle.

The car seems to be running good in every other way.

Has anyone experienced this, or does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks

Is it a 'whooshing sound'?

It may seem like a strange diagnosis, but if the boost pipe splits between the intercooler and EGR valve is makes a 'jet plane' sound out of the exhaust.

It's a very common fail on the TDCI, but thankfully it's a simple fix.

I'm going to have to check that on mine, had a new exhaust and boost pipe fitted in May and ever since, every time I put my foot down I get a whooshing noise, although it dies away above 2500 - 3000 rpm, but the sound definitly sounds like it comes from the rear of the car.

Yeah, the sound's worse as it comes on boost, and as the boost tails off, so does the noise, it's quite a distinctive sound. Car will be a load quicker with it fixed too!

that's because the boost is boosting the underneath of the car and not the engine

ford redesigned the material for the pipes when you get new ones

Default Whoosh

It is like a whoosh noise, there is definitely something going on. It doesn't seem to do it all the time. The first time I noticed it I thought it was the road surface, then I noticed it in other surfaces.
It could also sound like an aeroplane. If I slow down it goes away.

The tyres are Pirrelli and quite expensive as I had to replace one, so I don't think it is them.

wirralphil asked where I live, I am in Erskine in Scotland.

I like the car, it runs well otherwise, but this noise has got me worried.

Thanks for the replies.

Strange timing what with your post!

Hi am getting the same noise coming from the back off my 2004 2.0tdci mondeo. It only started after I replaced the back box on the exhaust. I've checked all the intercooler pipes and turbo charger pipes but can't see any splits, even took the hose which connects the egr valve with the intercooler and there's no splits but there a bit off oil in there. The egr valve was gungey oil deposit in there! The car runs fine but can be hard to start when it's hot (will start but cuts out straight away). Starts fine when cold.
Thanks
