I've been in numerous E39 M5's and they just seem like a fat lardy well built and quickish saloon....that also these days seem to be driven by(and this is my opinion) people that didn't stand a chance of even renting one back when it was new,let alone them purchasing one......
At the end of the day,a cossie gave you an everyday useable car with supercar(in the day)performance at an affordable price, the M5 just didn't do that....so why would people compare? Maybe because its just that the cossie still holds a decent value compared to its original list price unlike the M5...so these two cars have come into comparison wars/debates due to thier value brackets...but each to thier own as they say!
You mean an E60 I think

Sounds like you prefer the raw noise/power of a tuned Cossie. In one of the recent BMW car mags they tested the E39 M5 & the new V8 M3 upto 100mph they were almost identicle times ,over 100mph the V8 M3 started to slowly pull away. The E39 M5 is quicker than a E46 M3.

Simon.
What magazine was that? Id like to read that one. I presume it was a Manual V8 M3. The DCT ones seem to launch much quicker.

Trouble is it's so comfortable and quiet and smooth you're just wafted along on a wave of torque; need to glance at the speedo, or be against a quick car, to appreciate what's going on.
I wonder how fast it would be with the half tonne of electrics and comforts stripped out of it - even the headrests are electric....

As said above a ton is where it's at, stick it in 5th at any speed you fancy, and it'll go 'til 165 when the rev limiter stops the fun, gets there very easily and silly quick too.

Will, i suppose if your looking for a car that repeatedly breaks down, needs copious amounts of welding, smokes like Dot Cotton and drains your wages, then yeah i can see WHY you were dissapointed in the M5. !

Get one bought, and stop being a homo!

(ps - love you will! LOL)

They deffo are one of the most deceptivley quick cars out there its only till you mess with other cars you get an idea.

It will convincingly out drag an RS4 B7 beyond 2nd gear, same goes for E46 M3 (seem the same as the RS4!)

E92 M3 is a dead heat up to 120,the M5 is faster after this due to more torque.Covertible E93 is slow (same weight as M5 with less torque).

All this with DSC off mind!!

One of the most fun and engaging cars that I have owned. Particularly good when you start to really push them.

I have a E60 M5 and have owned it for nearly a year now, the car is genuinely an very good all-rounder. Took mine at last minute to ford fair this year and on track it was very quick, i can tell you i have done nothing to it since then except put fuel in it
What other car will take family of 4 and bags on trip of Europe do 200 + mph
The only down side it the fuel consumption it is dire and it does not help that it only has a 60 Ltr tank, around silverstone i was getting 6 MPG

I have to say, I was quite dissapointed in it, , was lovelly and torquey, comfy and easy to drive, and felt very tight, but it just didn't seem to really go all that well for a 400Bhp car .. Don't get me wrong, as a package it seems great, but just lacks any drama/excitement ...One thing that I did notice is that you can really feel the weight of the car driving it, is really odd, as the chassis is nimble, but hefty at the same time.

Am I missing the point?

Wish I had never been in fast cossies before

Might go and have a look at a few more, or maybe an E46 M3?
havent read all the posts but reading that reminds me of my 850 CSi.....Heavy...Slow and fuckin THIRSTY!!

Seems to have split opinions down the middle ...

Don't get me wrong, I didn't think it was a bad car at all, but just expected more to be honest, might be because people rave about them on here so much, but again it might be me expecting the wrong things from the car...

Get a remapped B5 RS4 instead then, that'll give you the grown up build but will also supply the punch in the back performance you're after... although I'm sure it wont be quite as sharp to drive as the E39 would be, it'll be mega fun and get the adrenaline going.

Cheers,
Grant
