Default cossie noisy tappets after rebuild

posted on here a few weeks ago about my tappets being noisy after i've rebuilt the engine and the general opinion was don't worry they'll shut up in the end, spoke to a ex ford rs tech and he said they always did it back in the day after a rebuild and not to worry. now i was happy to accept that but got pissed off so stuck a new set of lifters in there, that made it lovely and quiet for the 1st couple of times of running it then i started it and tapping again!

it's tappy on start up, drive it a few miles and it shuts right up sounds perfect, pull up and sit at idle for probably 30 seconds and it starts tapping again, not as bad but it still starts coming back.

does this still fit in with the "it's normal and will go away" or am i possibly dealin with a blocked oil way?

it's the only explaination i can come up with with it going quiet when it's driven then coming back on idle when the oil pressure obviously drops.

any help?

was on 10 40 for running in but it was like piss so i ditched it and went back to my regular 15 60 which i know ppl are going to have varying opinions on so soon after a rebuild but it's what i've used for years without trouble and wanted to illiminate the thin oil from being the cause of the tapping.

Did you check the oil galleries when doing the tappets, does it sound like a rear one/s tapping, esp on exhaust side ?

it's front inlet side, used the old screw driver to the ear method and it's loudest on the inlet manifold on 1 and 2

i just had similar problem, put new tappets in and it was still noisy and didnt clear even after 130 miles, turned out to be a blockage...i took the bungs out of the head and cleared it thru with a gallery brush, loads of sludgey shit came out..put it back together and it is spot on.i also put the genuine tappets back in as the pattern ones i bought were faulty and 3 fell apart.
hope this is of some help.

out of interest are the cams old and the tappets new if so cam could be worn a bit causing a bit of tap

inlet cam is new and the complete head has just been overhauled by cylinder head developments so i would hope there's no major shit issues in there but i do have to wonder if there is maybe a bit of swarf just restricting things a bit.

Did you use genuine followers? or the cheaper alternatives?

I would say that you have an oil supply problem, but whether thats due to poor pressure, blocked oilways i dunno.

they're ina followers so shouldn't be a quality problem. Oil pressure is cock on, 82psi on start up, 34psi hot idle and when driving sits between 65 and 80psi

oil pressure sounds pretty good then, but obviously it doesn't mean that the supply up to the head is adequate.

I seem to remember a batch of INA followers being sold on the cheap that were actually VW golf or some other fitment.

I got mine from Karl Norris for about Ł100 from memory, may have been slightly more.

Its hard to say exactly what you're problem is, but i'd definitely be tempted to take it to a specialist to check it, as oil supply problems could prove mega costly!

so working on the theory of it being swarf in the oil way, short of taking the head back off what are my options?

Strip out the cams and lifters. Turn the oil pump over by hand over and over again. You should be able to see the oil come up through each oil way. It should start from the N/S/F and work towards the O/S/R with the rear exhaust side being last to be fed. Check this and get back to us.

my fully re-built head took about 400 miles in total before the lifters were fully quite!

but did the noise come and go? That's what's getting me, when it's driven it shuts up then when it's at idle it comes back.

yea it did as it depends on what grade oil your using to run it in with and also at what temp it's at also!

well i'm now using a 15 60 which has helped the noise no end, it's 10 times quieter than it was but still there. think i'm gonna put another hundred or so miles on it and see what happens. there's not a massive lack of oil supply in the head as it's perfectly visable to see it all sloshing around if you take the oil filler cap off.

get it run in m8 do 300-500 miles on the mineral oil then new oil and filter it and well I ONLY use Millers 10/60 in both of mine without complaint and see what It's like(I think it will be fine) imo!
