Default Mk3 Golf Gti 16v

Is anyone clued up on these? Looking at getting one but just wondered what they are like to use daily - Running costs and maintenance wise.

Anything major to look out for?

Cheers

good cars and go well, feel really solid with it being VW and my 16v had 130 something k when i sold it.

Fuel wise i do short journeys and it didnt really use any more than say a 1.8 zetec escort.

Things to look out for apart from the above is the gear box, make sure all gears select ok, especially reverse as mine was buggered when i sold it. Half the time i just couldnt for the life of me get reverse, and sometimes 1st and 2nd were a bitch.

I only had an 8v to be honest but i thought it was a bag of crap.
My 8v struggled to get over 30mpg round town, and was slow as hell.
Been out in a few 16v and my god there slow.

Far better runarounds about imo, like i just sold my primera gt runaround, averaged 32 round town and 38 on the motorway.

You could pick up a mk4 golf for not too much more if its to your taste. Far more modern to look at inside and out and lovely blue and red dials

LHD220turbo - i'll drop you a pm in a couple of days, got to work out the situation with current car first.

I know Mk4's are better and there are better cars out there, it's just something i've fancied for a while. Not too worried about performance or economy to be honest, just want to make sure theres no major issues.

Needs to be mk3 or newer to put my plate on (m reg). Not sure what else i fancy to be honest. But like i say, i'm not worried about performance really as it's only a runaround at the end of the day

Where are the main places for rust mate? Other than the obvious arches/sills/under kit and door bottoms

Im on the look out for a vr6, been told the main places of rust are tail gate, sills and arches.... mainly where the body kit is. Had a mk3 8v, good cheep car, not the fastest but never let me down.
