I'm guessing the Land Rover axles would be narrower than the Transit for starters.

There's also a lot of extra metalwork under the County compared to a standard van - extra subframes front and rear to raise it up, plus a fair bit under and around the engine and box.

The new 4x4 Transit is available in van form and is designed by County or Countytrac as they are called now - its about £3.5k extra as an option. However, it's not a manual system - it's fully automatic using wheel sensors and what have you to feed power to the fronts if they're slipping. Ride height and so on are exactly the same as a normal road van so it's nothing like a proper off-road vehicle.

The County conversion was over 12 grand on top of the van back in the mid-late nineties - can't have been far short of the cost of the van to start with back then!

Good luck with your project mate - you might like to check out the Transit forum for plenty of info - there's a section on there for camper conversions.

Cheers,

Andy

When I was Younger! think 1994 the garage i worked in, opposite them had two new at the time Transits, they fitted petrol station forcourt signs, anyway on the back of both transits said "cosworth" one day i was taking the piss and my boss said come and have a look, lifted the bonnet and they were fitted with the v6 cosworth lumps apparently from new?

They weren't 4x4 but sounded nice and went well apparently built to cope with the weight?

Anyone know about these?

The V6 was available as a factory option - the 3 litre Essex in earlier models up to about 1990, and the 2.9 Cologne in later ones. This was mainly fitted to ambulances but is also found in a few minibuses and vans. It's the same engine used by the Sierra and Granada.

I've not heard of any being fitted with the Cossy lump straight from the factory, but that doesn't mean there weren't any of course - I'll ask around and see what I can find. These days of course there are quite a few Cossy Transits - quite a popular conversion job - should be a fair few videos on youtube if you have a search.

Cheers,

Andy

Had one lined up which a guy in Essex was working on for me for about nine months, but it stalled through lack of a few parts and he ended up selling it for export. This is that one:

It was a very early IFS model - that particular front end was only made for a year or so before being altered by all accounts and parts are like the proverbial to get hold of. I'd been without a van for too long as I'd sold my previous one and in the end I told this guy I needed to either sort this or move on, and he took that as meaning I'd found another and got rid of it!>

Hi Andy

At http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280587125108&ssPageNam e=STRK:MEWNX:IT I was winning bidder last week for a similar (perhaps the same, but if so there are several obvious differences now) white County 4 x 4 - bearing the same reg - and still in Essex.

No money yet changed hands, not even the requested deposit, as an HPI check has thrown up some questions I'm waiting for answers on.

Do you know for sure that the vehicle in your photos was exported?

Can you, or anyone else, throw any more light on this vehicle and/or its present day manifestation?

Thanks/cheers.

Might be best to PM him so he gets an email about it. Otherwise he may not see the thread...

What's the HPi thrown up? (he says noseily)

Just to confirm subsequent very useful telephone discussion with Andy - thanks Andy.

Differences explained, and is the same vehicle, which clearly was not exported. Onwards and upwards!

There's a green Mk1 4x4 that's kept at the Ford Heritage Centre! Is that the one you saw?

No, it was a black mk3. Was on a trailer all day, so you could see underneath.
Was in one of the Ford mags many years ago too.
