mechanics wages, are my employers taking the piss

i am an mot tester and technician at a vauxhall dealer, been there 6 month as the skoda dealer i used to work at went tits up and shut, anyway i am on £7.50 ph, a fair bit less than i was on, just wondering wot the going rate really is in the north east cos if thats me wack i may just get out of the trade alltogether, the rest of the lads are on much the same and doesnt really bother them but surely its pretty cack?

mate with the state the motor trade/ whole country is in i wouldnt complain if i was you just count yourself lucky you have a job.....for now

and as for changing trades i wouldnt bother .....everything is fucked every trade is struggling

just try and be hapy you have a job till things pick up

that is a crap rate mate
but as above the way the trade is at the moment at least you've got a job
i was on that 4 years ago as mechanic/tester
i no longer test, just spanner monkey and i'm making more than that
and thats up here, down south the wages are usualy a bit higher
main dealers are usualy higher again

i am happy to have a job but it just gets to a point where you think its not worth graftin like an idiot for 250snoots a week when i make them 500 a day

you maybe think you are making them that ....but take off the cost of receptionist/service manager/rates/electric/gas....need i go on....thats why motor dealers are going tits up right left and centre..overheads....have a think about it

i worked at a vx dealer for 12 years until it shut down last month mot tester as well flat rate was £10.40 p/hour but after ya vvcr payment and bonus after ya 40 hours prob worked out to £13 p/hour that in london tho

I was on 7.25 an hour at Audi just PDI'ing cars until last month, Was being the word and as said above I am finding it imposible to try and even get a job let alone back on the tools mate, Although I have seen a few testers jobs being advertised up here for 18-20k ( I know its a hike for you ).

its an employers market at the moment, there are more and more skilled people out of work now than ever, if you have a job, head down and get on with it. 12 months ago you could not find a skilled technician for less the £10/h now we are overrun by them for a lot less.

I really feel for all the guys who are working for the same rates now . Inflation at about 4% per year over 12 years

Just shows that a state the country is in.

I now run a contract cleaning company and now make prob nearly half what I did 5 years ago.

fook that matey i was on £13.50 an hour working on mobile plant and i thought i was hard done to,that was just over two years ago before i left the uk to move to OZ. wages here are generaly worse but i found a good job on more money so i can't complain i'm home at 3.30 and start at 7.15 so alls good. i would look at a bit of retraining and move to heavey plant the wages are so much better my old job now earns about 35k a year 5 wks holls good sickness benifits and pension. i used to do contract fitting all over the uk and that was on average £32 an hour but would go up for unsocial hrs and wkends. i never had trouble finding work but i suppose things may have changed a bit since i left. but i would deffo have a look at the plant side of things as the money seems so much better for next to no different job.

i work for daf im on 11.50ph then every 3rd week im on lates 1400-2250 gets me a pound an hour more plus saturdays are time and a half and anything over 8hrs in a day is time and a third and theres always over time if wonted. I would never work on cars other than for cash in my own time!. And with someone like daf if u do daf aid call out u can double your wages or more the week u are on call !

Employers market in most trades at the moment, Not a great deal of jobs available but many many people out there just willing to be able to pay their bills.
As an employer you aint gonna really up the wages unless you really have to.

Our place is multi national, made good profits in the last year, expanded again within that but 'Due to the current climate we cannot dish out pay rises for this year', Its all a load of tits

mate the motortrade is far from fucked,,,, on friday i had 5 brand new focus RS's arrive that had been sold and we are getting a trailor every 2 days of sold cars,,,,, on and my department are on 123% of budget target so far from the start of the year and currently on 113% for this month alone,,,,, new car sales/dealerships are back and working very well and ford even anounced they made a profit this year too and was over target aswell for last year

i fell out with my old company on a tuesday afternoon,,,,,,, and was offered 3 jobs by the friday and still had interview calling me for another 2 weeks,,,,,,,,,, and its not like im good at my job or do anything even hard tbh

mate its the headoffice cutting corners a cutting out the dead dealerships that dont turn a profit,,,, for years they had places loose money and the other businesses just paied for them so all areas had a main dealer to go to,,, otherwise they aint gonna sell any ford/bmw ect in that area if the main dealer is 80 mile drive away,,,,,, but theres a audi and vauxhall 10 miles away,,, wonder what the most popular cars would be driven in that area in 5 years time

they need to have some places to show the brand and do all sorts of things with franchises to encourage it,, sometimes even buying it back and run them at a loss, my old dealership never made a penny profit in 9 years,, hence ford owned it towards the endand that was the year they made a wapping,,,, 70k profit but they sold the site for 14 million due to the expected economic issues they was predicting would happen,,,,, THAT DID !!!

there is stupid amounts of money in the car industry just we dont get to even think about it as they are always complaining they are making a loss

remember last year that GM was ment to be bankrupt in a week if it never got a bailout,,,, which it never did get the amount they claimed they needed,,,,,,, yet they aint folded yet
