I'm interested to know - from other users actually, about Nikon and Canon models.

I was talking to someone the other night saying how (compared to my 350d) his Nikon D60 images looked so much more colourful ... i would seriously consider buying a Nikon when it comes to upgrading. But he mentioned that although thats true the higher canon models are better when it comes to image colour.

My 2p is have a read about on photo websites - try dpreview.com and photography forums.

Cheers
Nick

I think the Sony A200 is excellent value for money and offers the following benefits.

10million pixels- Offers larger prints

Built in Anti Shake- This means every lens has this benefit. You have to pay for this feature on Nikon & Canon and it adds a lot to the price of a lens.

Compatible with minolta and konica 20 year back range of lens, which offer a cheap way into photography.

Price- You can get the camera for Ł222 with 18-70mm sony kit lens and I personally feel this is a better camera than the Nikon you posted. But I would recommend going into jessops and getting a feel for the camera and then buying somewhere cheaper!

Generally the advice will be get a Cannon or a Nikon, but there are some decent entry level camera's by other manufacturers such as the Sony A200.

In reality, you wont go far wrong with any of those camera's, they'll all produce images that will satisfy you once you work out how to use them but personally i'd go with the Nikon as i just like the way my D60 feels to hold and use which is basically the same as the D40.

You would need to compare pictures from the 2 cameras on the same day with the same set up to compare image colour etc. Lighting on the day is the important factor.

As for cameras personally i'm a canon man and always will be but either cameras from Nikon or Canon at the same price will give very similar results. It's all about which one you prefer. Both have their good and bad points but both will take pictures as good as each other. It's the photographer at the end of the day not the camera that dictates the results. My advice would be to get an idea of which two cameras you like and go to jessops or somewhere and have a play with them both to see which one you like.

this is what you want..
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...px?sku=1024467

send your coupon on and get Ł50 back as well so ends up being Ł393
the kit lens is a IS lens as well (granted its a cheap lens but will get you away no problem)

or

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/prod...px?sku=1025953

with the extra lens and it will cover a decent focal range for a beginner..

Why are you people showing him camera's that cost double the one he asked about? Show or recommed him something inexpensive to get started with and learn on.

If he is looking at Ł250 budget, the Sony a200 wins hands down for features to price. If you PM user Dicko & sarah they are new to Dslr camera's and bought a Sony A200, you could see how they are getting on with it.

Sound advice

Even if you just go into a camera shop to try them out, it dosnt mean you have to buy it there and then

I too have been looking at DSLR's recently.
I've a few questions hope the OTS doesnt mind
Whats considered an acceptable amount of mega pixles? 10k? 12k 15k? and where is the difference seen? as in would the difference only be visable on large prints?

Very good option imo... i'd say the things to look out for when buying used camera gear are scratched lenses and dirt/moisture ingress, usually this wont be a problem as the majority of DSLR people tend to look after their kit.

You need to see the cameras close up. They may not feel comfortable when you hold them.

If it doesnt feel right then you wont use it.

I took about 6 months to decide on the one I have (Canon 400D) as thats the one I felt more comfortable with.

Suggest looking around this forum too http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ full of very helpful people.
