Although some people have told me they have used a paper clip or similar sized piece of metal which has worked?

Er, not really.

Its just a matter of co-ordinating a press and turn of the trip reset button with a switch on of the ignition.

Anyone on here with Autodata will tell you the procedure to do it.

Its not complicated, honest.

for the golf its something like hold in trip reset, turn on ignition, turn trip reset clockwise etc, cant remember exactly how to do it, as I hvent had my olf for a few years.

BMW E46 is done with the trip reset also, however the E36 like you have in your sig either requires a reset tool, or you can use a bit of wire from an earth to pin 7, you earth it for i think 7 seconds for oil service and 12 seconds for inspection

Here you are -

reset service indicator golf Mk IV

If it's a MKIV Golf.
  • Turn on ignition.
  • Hold down Right trip button and continue to do so whilst turning off ignition.
  • Still with Right trip button held down turn ignition back on.
  • Release Right trip button.
  • With ignition still on turn Left trip button to the Right and release.
  • Turn off ignition.

Can also be reset via VAG-COM if you've got it.
