I like the VW's too, but the rat look or hoodride as some call is it just mindless.

Fair enough some people can't afford decent paintjobs, but to deliberatly make your car look worse is just stupid.

the worse thing is, they ask just as much for a rat look car than one with decent paint!

My mate has a green bug thats just been restored and given a few subtle mods, he enters it in a VW show and shine in the modified class and was beaten to 1st place by a rat look bug.

He then wonders why a rusty piece of shit is better than his fully restored modified Bug ............. Dub owners huh

picture of said green bug :

Im not a fan of the rat look, but after going to a big VW/Audi show earlier this year, it was very refreshing looking round the cars to see so many different ideas of modding!
Dozens of different choices of wheels for example, where-as you go to a Ford or Vauxhall show and its the same old wheels and mods over and over again

Sorry but this made me laff, how very blinkered.

How many FWD Ford road cars do you see that that can do 10 second 1/4miles as i know there is quite a few VW's

Take James Hodgesons (might be spelt wrong) Mk2 Golf, one of the fastest FWD cars in the country, i'd say the VW boys can go fast as well.

I had two rat look cars.
A minor that I handpainted and a beetle that was decked and painted black.
Both were tatty, the beetle less so, and the morris was covered in rusty chrome.

And the reason why they were 'ratty'? Because I didnt have any money to spend on them and they were cheap shitters I couldnt give a fuck about.

Anyone who intentionally fucks up a good car to start with needs their head read imo!
I've seen 'new' VW golfs and lupos that the owners have attacked with brillo pads. They should be made to surrender their keys to the nearest sane person and banned from owning a decent car for the rest of their days.

VWs with decent wheels and nice paint are cool, rusty ones are pish.

a pal of mine's sprayed his mk3 Golf matt black and put a Vento front end on, all of which is cool. he then went and got a spare bonnet to rust. he drove about for weeks with it looking balls, it didn't rust well so he put his matt black one on.

what's the fucking point?

the "rat look" is the same as "student look" - for cunts

But thats the whole point.

Vw's have always been about styling and different approaches.

If you want a powerfull engine and want to drive like and be labled as a TIT then you get a FORD dont you!

Im not saying that "rat looking" is good, cos its not. I mean take this. this was my 1949 Beetle when i bought it.

can you believe someone let a car as rare as this get to such a state. a 1949 standard like this is worth Ł25k fully restored!

To understand the rat look you need to look back to the 50's (and 60/70's uk)in america, young lads couldnt buy flashy cars or get finance like we can today. so they bought old bangers/or hand me downs from dad, and with what lieelt money they had they "customised" their cars to make them personal/unique.

They didnt have money for flashy paint, or massive power hikes. this is where the look originated, and in my opinion these cars do look cool.

the new modern twist on the rat look where people purposly "rat" vehicles to me is just plain stupid. but then again they are following the same basic recipy..even call it a philosophy. And once again maby the lads of today cant afford nice flash fast cars, so they focus on smaller details.

Cars are not all about whos the fastest, whos spent the most, whos got the biggest this and that, well that is unless your a ford man.

I like sleepers, ie fast cars that look tatty or standard, I cant see ANY point in a gay slow car with rust all over it though, just buy a metro.

Thing is 'rat look' started way way back in america. It wasnt about making your car look shit it was about not spending money on paint etc and spending it all on mental engines. Thats why most of the 'rat' look hot rods you see around these days are proper fast. They didnt care about what their car looked like, just how fast it was.

Personally I quite like it, although I prefer it on hot rods to Veedubs but each to their own. At the same time I dont see the point in owning a car that you cant really drive and spends all its time in the garage having its exhaust polished or sitting at a show with loads of mirrors around it. Swings and roundabouts really.

You can get paint or laquer with metal in it so the metal in the paint of laquer rusts.. so yeah, people do actually paint them specifically to make them rust.

It was found to be painted with white house paint when Mr Brown tried to respray it satin black

Will get some before and after pics up

Im building a fiesta at the moment ... mk4 van wit a 1.6 zetec and high lift cams, straight through exhaust and mondeo brakes ... and its rat look cos the paint on it is pants and im only 19 ... so cant afford a respray cos im an apprentice and only finished restoring a capri ... which aint rat look cos i spent all my money on paint and panels ... moral of the story ???? if ur broke and want shiny its gonna be slow ... if u want fast ur gonna spend wat little money u have on second hand performance parts so wont afford a respray .... thats my point of view anyway
